My 20D arrived, safe and sound from New York to California. It was shipped out Monday via 2-day air.

Contents:

The 20D
17-85mm IS
70-200mm f2.8L
Vertical grip + strap
Speedlite 580ex + Sto-fen diffuser
remote switch (for still work)
I was able to inspect everything during my lunch break, probably should have charged the battery, but tried taking some pictures with it as it came. I was able to get a few pictures taken before it started blinking at me. *sigh* The battery is charging, and I'll get to play with it more tonight once I get home from work. :D

Actually, I don't even have that first image anymore. :o I don't know if my kids will stand for me taking their pictures tonight...they're all down with chickenpox... :(

But I've got enough stuff to figure out before I try anything even remotely serious.

And I need to find some threads about the vertical grip to see if I've got an 'older' one or a 'newer' one...

-- John (who had chickenpox when he was 4 or 5 and doesn't even remember it)

Hey chicken pox pics are great to capture. remember mine as a kid. Anyway WHO IS THE PARENT? Tell them to pose or go to bed with out supper. LOL, thats how things run in my household....not.

Seriously Congrats! Just got my 20D and loving it. Glad to hear that you are getting the minolta out of your system.

That is the perfect "KIT" IMO . . . way to go. You will not be sorry and you will just love it. Get a hood for the 17-85 with your 'next' order, you will enjoy a little better color and no flare in your shots. I REALLY like that little lens, I call it my street sweeper, because it is so darn versatile in town and with people, etc. A good buy, oh, you will like the L lens too.

If the serial number on the bottom of the grip starts with anything other than 05 you have the older grip.

Actually, I wish they would eat something... I have been taking photos of them with chickenpox. It will be interesting to compare the color saturation between the two cameras.

It might take me a little bit to work that 7Hi completely out of my system. It's a matter of being familiar with the equipment, and where all the settings are.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to climbing the 20D learning curve.

Thanks for the reassurance on the 17-85. I wasn't sure if it would come with hood or not.

The UV filters & polarizers should be here on Thursday, so that ought to protect the lenses from fingers & such.

Congrats. I'm selling my 20d to a local high school coach tomorrow. He's getting my 20d along with the 550ex, the 28-135 and my year-or-so old Canon S9000, all for $1600.00. I think it's a good deal for both of us, as I did want to sell it as a package.

I'd be very surprised if B&H sold you the "old" grip. But what is the story with that?

Really would like to hear more about your 17-85 lens...I am thinking on buying one shortly...

I'm still trying to learn my way around this camera, and I don't really have much to compare it to (except for the Minolta 7Hi), so:

the focus speed is incredible;
the images I've taken have been very clean;
the images seem to be a bit softer than the Minolta, but not that much. This is probably more due to the 20D than the lens. I was expecting this based on what I've read about DSLRs;
I'm sure the F4-5.6 will rear its head one day, but won't the image stabilization help with that (not necessarily with DOF)

So far, I'm very happy with the lens, but that may change as I become more familiar with the equipment.

Oh, crud. It starts with 03...:(

I haven't had any of the issues with it yet, and I did have the bit 70-200mm lens on it (and held it by the grip). But it's only been the first day. I haven't yet been in a situation that triggers the Dependency Sensor (that's the sensor that's built into all electronic devices, which detects the amount of dependency placed in said device, and causes a malfunction when the dependency is too high--see Murphy's Law) :)

Sooo...do I take this up with B&H or send the grip into Canon?

Thanks,

-- John

just put the image in photoshop, and USM it .
That will bring out the sharpness more.

Ultra Sonic Motor. It is the Lens focus motor that Canon uses in there L, and other slightly higher end motors. It provides much quieter, and faster auto focus that a non USM Lens.

In photoshop it's UnSharp Mask. It sharpens the picture.

woops.. my fault . I didn't scroll up.. lol

yeah I usually use USM in photoshop to sharpen the image because I keep all my settings in the 20 D 0 . I think it's parameter 2 or 1 . I forgot, I never change it anyway.
I once found a site, that broke down how to use the USM, it is on my home pc. I will link you when I find it .. let me search this board, and see if I see it.
I think I found it here.

ok here you go ..
I read this article fully, so I could understand how to sharpen my images from the 20D. I am basically used to processing my images after shooting, but try to set up conditions that will require as little processing as possible.

I was doing that with a few pictures late last night. I'll have to check out the PS elements that came with the camera, and see what that offers me.

I've been using PaintShopPro for years, and it has a USM as well. It's done a pretty fair job so far (been using version 9 since September or so).

I've been using an '03' grip since I got my 20D in December. I use the 70-200 and 100-400L lenses handheld a lot (in portrait orientation too) and I have not had one single problem.

So don't send it off unless you have a problem :)

If you don't have the latest firmware, 1.1.0 and you happen to be in Orange County just stop in at the Canon Repair Center (1 949 753-4200) in Irvine, 15995 Alton Parkway (just at the junction of the Laguna Canyon Rd. and the 405 Freeway) and they will load it for you in minutes. I think you can do this over the net also but it's just an alternative. The repair center is busy between 11 and 2 so come early or late was the advice given.
