View Full Version : Elk On The Winter Range . . .

I was up in the high country today, went over towards Bear Lake for a spring dip in the lake. ;) I passed the winter range of one of our elk herds and stopped in and took a few shots. This old bull looks like he earned his keep this winter. He is pretty lean and the cows are kind of plump . . . lol. I hope he recovers his strength by next fall. There were 150 head here today by my guess. Most have moved back out into the national forrest ground. I never tire of seeing them, there was this bull with his antlers still attached and a few spikes in the mix. They were sparing and dreaming of the time they will be king.

As usual another nice capture. You must live near more wildlife than anyone else on the forum. It's great you have so many opportunities, but the important thing is how well you take advantage of them.

LOL, Mark, it is a bit embarrassing I suppose . . . but I don't mind. Saw a few wild turkeys today but they are faster than I, this time. I do not mind people but I like animals. This is the only big bull with horns left . . . the rest have fallen off and or moved out.

Looks like that bull has had some better days. Hopefully he will pull through! Its my dream somebody to live in Wyoming or Montana. I love the mountains!

If you have never hunted wild turkeys, you cannot believe how fast those suckers can run! I used to try to go after them as a kid in the Texas panhandle. Not easy to bag, unless you can catch them coming off the roost. I much prefer to shoot things with my "Canon" now.

I think it is cute that there is a Magpie, or something like that, hidden in there.
Get a different closer composition with just the bird and one elk, and that would be neat. Get a dramatic sky behind that, and then it would really say something.

Very nice photo, Rod, but I really enjoyed your description. Sure looks like spring is on the way, or is that FALSE spring? I remember in Afton and Jackson, and there are probably many others, large arches made of elk antlers that have been picked up around that area. I'll bet you have a few, too.

Love the way you tell the story with your great picture, RJ. I can almost hear that midwest drawl and see you tipping the edge of your cowboy hat. Please tell me I'm not too far off base....
Love the elk!

LOL, yes I get to Afton from time to time. Funny to hear of folks not from here that know the little towns . . . this is a shot of a few of todays cows. I guess the girls want equal time.
The high meadows clear out of the snow before the valley, a funny thing I suppose. One thing we do have is critters . . . ;)
