I shoot for the school newspaper, and was approached at this game by two pros offering some tips and advice about actually shooting, and the business of it. Just some words of encouragement for those out there who are trying to get their start in the business.

Here's a few of my favorites, as well as the school website that ran the story of the game with embedded gallery.

I'll be brutally honest since its the only means to help, please don't be offended. The only one that even makes it home to be processed is the last. Some crop work is needed on that one to eliminate the dead space on teh left and most of Robinson but othewise, its sharp and well exposed. The others show nice timing but are unacceptably soft and/or oof.

Some of these were shot with a Canon 50mm prime, and when it works, boy does it work. My problem is that Basketball is the hardest sport for me to shoot, because I'm using a 70-200mm and just don't have the money to pick up a real lens (read canon 24-70 f/2.8 L), i have to make due with what I have. What do you recommend for shooting at that range, because like I said, I'm new to actual sports photography, besides my little brother's baseball games? But thanks for the honesty, by no means do I post to "show off" but rather to hear all the weak points and where I can improve.

That said, I shoot 98% of my HS and NCAA hoops from the baseline with the 70-200 f2.8. I have shot with my 17-40 and to that extent, the 24-70 would make a fine lens but not one I'd go to for the majority of shots. The reach of the 70-200 is great for creating nicely blurred b/g for player separation (technicians note, I did not incorrectly call it bokeh ) as well as providing anough reach to cover half a court easily.

Tony

I shoot for my college newspaper and I always use my 70-200! If you sit at the corners of the baseline it is the perfect focal length to cover the game and grab layups, etc. I feel I get more shots with the 70-200 than my 24-70. Hope this helps
