I usually don't gloat about equipment, but I thought I'd share with some of you who have spent time coaching me (roanjohn, CDS, Belmondo, etc.) about what I've recently purchased. A fairly generic setup to go with my Rebel XT:

17-40 L, Hoya Super HMC Filter 77 mm
50 1.8 , Hoya Super HMC Filter 52 mm

I've still got the 70-200 f/4 L , the 85 f/1.8, 100 f/2.8 Macro on my wish list...maybe later this year if business is good!

I didn't think I'd be purchasing a dSLR anytime soon. I heard of the Rebel XT announcement in February. I saw the posting that B&H had them early last week. And approximately 10 days later, I've already purchased all of this. Amazing, especially considering that I made-do with my trusty G3 for the past two years. :D

I thought I could hold out. Keep from getting bitten by the bug. But you guys are all evil. :p Now I can hear the siren song of the 1 series bodies calling me.

Pekka, please cancel my membership or at least downgrade my account so that I cannot see the EOS and Marketplace forums. Please.

Pradeep:

It's more insidious that you even know....

There are subliminal messages flashed on your screen telling you to buy L lenses and to lust for 1-series bodies.

You have no chance.

this forum has realy screwed me up and it just gets worse.i got a 300d last year and was happy with it.all i had was the kit lens and i was going to florida in a few weeks to see the
air show.i looked on this forum and decided to get a 70-20 f4L to give me a bit more scope.then i started to find limitations with the camera.sinse then i got myself a 20d and a 17-40, 3 bags a flash some lee filters a tripod ,monopod, remote timer and 3 gb in cf cards.i am going back to florida next month ,flying to ny for the day so i can go to b&h
to get a 100-400.all i seem to do is dream L glass.the more i try to convice my self i
dont need something the more i want it.i am realy dreding going in to b&h as i will get tempted to buy all kinds of things.i think i may have to send the wife in while i wait outside.it would be cheaper to be a drug addict lol.

Pradeep,

Boy oh boy, that didn't take long. L glass already! I've made it almost 18 months so far with a dSLR and haven't succumbed to the siren call. (We won't talk about bodies, ok? ;) )

I'll admit I think the 17-40L is going to be my next lens. With the upgrade to the 1D I don't have a wide angle lens, and it's limiting. I'm torn between the 17-40, the 16-35 or one of the various wide angle primes.

Anyway, enjoy your kit to its greatest. You're going to love the results.

Take care,

Mark

Well I started with my first DSLR the Drebel 300D in Jan. 2005 and if you look at my signature you will see all the bad things that have happen to me while I have been here. every time I get a new lens it costs me something for my girlfriend (that was not to bad till she found out how much "L" glass cost) my newest "L" from Dell cost me a new laptop since I was allready ordering might as well throw that in to she said. But becasue of the great "Friends" here on this Forum I made every choice with great knowledge. Thanks to everyone and do me a favor stop posting all the great pictures with lens that I don't have so I won't need to go OH Boy I need one of them...LOL

Pradeep 1 wishes to be downgraded, I, as a junior can assure him it is no less expensive !
As a junior member for approx 6 weeks & 13 posts to my name, I was wondering about the various accession points, ie. at what stage does one become-a member-senior member -gold member-moderator ?
As a 66yr. old 'junior' firstly will I live long enough,& secondly will I stay solvent enough to ascend this hierarical ladder ! ? This may not be the correct forum, however it is the one I start & end my day with. Please put me in touch with' EOS Forums Anonymous' !

Hi Marshall,

Welcome to the nut house. A Junior Member is anyone who joins. Then it goes, I believe, as follows:

Member = 100 posts
Senior Member = 1000 posts
GoldMember = 2000 posts
Moderator = Invitation
Super Mod = 10,000 posts? (example CyberDyneSystems....aka CDS)

Regarding the money investment....yeah, membership is "free" but if you start hanging around the EOS forum, you'll be done in for. I became a Senior Member with my Powershot G3. I avoided the EOS forum for almost one year, but then couldn't resist. I was able to hold out for another year before I succumbed to my injuries. :)

The people on this forum especially are all poor living in cardboard boxes in front of their ex-wifes/girlfriends/friends/family's homes. I almost joined the Cardboard Box Brigade until my wife granted me reprieve. She orderd the Rebel XT and sundries....so she knew how much we spent there. The other items, including the 17-40L and 50 1.8 were purchased after I sold off some old film gear that had value. That kept her from turning me out of the house.

She still does not understand why I need to spend $700 on a lens, when I could have bought a kit lens for $80 and it would have done the same, or better, in her mind.

I don't have a good answer for that. I just told her that one day in the future, when she is all old and frumpy, she'll look back on these photos from a lifetime of memories and be glad that we had the best equipment to capture them by. I told her that every human generation from this day forward will see our pictures just the way we saw them (because of digital capture), and those pictures will be forever perfect. Fortunately, my lofty eloquence worked on her and she was happy.

I also told her that I'd take "model shots" of her. She was happy. I also told her that once we get a bigger home, that I was planning on having one room as a studio setup, and she agreed to that as well.

Hmmmmm.....

I can directly blame RoanJohn, Belmondo, and CDS for pushing me off of the L cliff early. Never ask those guys for advice on anything. They'll just end up costing you more money. Life was good...I was happy with my 28-105 and 75-300. Then I talked to them. Roanjohn then did the unthinkable and sent me full sized, unedited photos from his 17-40 and I was hooked. Belmondo and CDS bound my feet, and RoanJohn nudged me over the edge.

No. No. No. I will have to be come President of the Cardboard Box Brigade if I do, as my wife will surely throw me out. Also, no full size samples from any 1 series body for me either. ;)

Actually, if Pekka is kind and generous, he'll cut off my access to the EOS forum altogether. :D

Pradeep,

Sounds like you've got it real bad. You should just give the credit cards to your wife. It'll be cheaper. There's nothing like L glass to run up a credit card bill.

Hi, my name is Jim and I am an "L"aholic, with flashes of "DO"mania.

I started with a desire to take good pictures with instant gratification, thus a DSLR. My work allowed me to be introduced to better equipment being used by pro's on the NASCAR circuit. Nothing quite like starting near the top.

I've manage to resist the tempatation of 1 Series bodies, but just barely. I thank my Scottish heritage for this, as I am able to afford to satiate my desires.

I've controlled my spending on lens, but that was only due to my natural resistance to addictive behavior (with the small exception of this forum:lol: ).

There is one more "L" in my future, a 400 prime with 1.4X. Or maybe a 400 DO.

I, for one, fully support the rampant purchasing of quality lens. As demand will increase supply and reduce pricing.

(Apologies to those that actually use this type of help group, as this is meant in fun. Keep up the good work.)

Regards to all, and fulfill those desires.

Here's my take...make the investment in the glass (especially great quality "L" glass) since we'll all be replacing the computers behind them in 2-4 year cycles.

Will it make a difference? Classic question. One has to be at peace with one's own picky-ness. ...and don't even get me started on calibrating your monitor...;)

The pics taken with L series lenses are excellent in details and sharpness. Just look at the pics in the forums and you'll see the difference.

The other draw back is the possibility that your credit cards might go missing...taken over by someone out there who'll probably scream or faint when the bills come.;)

Me...I have the 70-200/f4L and currently completing the 17-40L....and thinking of moving to the 20D.....wait till my better half sees this....there'll be murder....Ha.

Have fun, guys...

Add another victim to the "Got My DSLR; Where's The L?" club...

A little over a week after ordering the DRebel XT, ANOTHER B&H order is down for a nifty-fifty, a 420 flash, and 70-200 f/4 L. After putting down the phone, I almost yelled 'ENOUGH ALREADY!'

Is it?

Hmm...Just a crazy thought here...Have you guys thought about the real identity of Pekka? He might be a sales and marketing executive with Canon digital camera division.

Darn! I should have thought about it earlier...LOL
