Is this the wrong board for this?

I am considering a pentax ist DS, $899 new with lens

I am looking for a cam in the $1000 range.

Any suggestions?

- need remote
- want to stay in the price range with case, card, batteries, lens
- SLR

My suggestion is to check out Canons new Digital Rebel XT. I've been hearing good stuff about it, and it fits the price range you're looking for.
I kind of doubt that you'll get any votes for the Pentax ist here mainly because this is a Canon board. ;)

A friend of mine bought an IST Ds

Took it back after a week, said it handled worse than his digital rebel

Sure I understand that this is a Canon board but I would love to hear your comparisons.
I am researching cameras and trying to make an educated decision.

Any others? Why is Canon better?

Personally I think you'd be better off getting a Rebel XT because of the huge range of available lenses, but seeing as you asked about the Pentax.

Wow! Great review.
Definite weakness is the choice of lenses.
I looked up the Canon Rebel xt and really liked it. It is however more expensive and the lenses are too.

The digital Rebel XT is $100 more and gives you a lot of the features you'll find in the more capable 20D. Of course, we are biased. ;)

I've used Pentax and found that their optics are first rate for what you may need it to do. This AF body can use all of the older mount lenses too, which is good if you've already got an investment in those.
