and if it means anything to anyone, those numbers add up to 2114 for those wanting to start a conspiracy theory about a secret code of some sort.

if you convert that to hex it becomes 842.... now that's creepy, each number is half of the previous and all even!

135L is tempting also:D I'm waiting for a 135L IS! :D Naah, but actually, I would get the current one if need be; it's an awesome lens in spite of its age. It's just that I don't have the need for it right now, and I am guessing by the time I feel it necessary to add the 135 in my lineup there will have been a update already. Hopefully, lol.

Nice summary of this thread. A+ for you :) (I would have given you 10/10 but then I would be a numerologically superstitious dork)As long as you don't give me a 60D/60D, because, since 60D doesn't exist, it would mean 0/0, and we all know what happens when you divide by zero!

I am just waiting for CanonGarcon to come back to all these replies and do this... :)LOL!! Drop a big one? Although he seems to rather be dropping little sniplets here and there, but they also amount to a load of crap.

You could take your numerological superstitions the other way saying that Canon does not currently produce a DSLR with an even number in it's name (not counting mk II, mk IV, and considering "0" as neither odd nor even). 1000D, 500D, 550D, 50D, 7D, 5D, 1D.
Therefor the 60D cannot exist!
um, not now, but they did have 40D, 400D and 20D

It will be called the Canon G60 but will be better know as the CG60.
For those of you who are numerically superstitious, this works. Because the naming standard is being applied posthumously to the predecessors in the line. The 10D is now the CA10, 20D is the CB20, ..., the 50D is the CE50. The F designation has been skipped because of the 7D, which brings us to the 50D successor which will be know as the CG60.

[Begin Humor]

Hey folks, I have some insider info! There will be a 60D. But more importantly, there will be a special version as well, the Canon EOS Digital Garçon Limited Edition 60D! This camera is so awesome it has a special function that allows it to do anything! Here's how it works: You have to order it exclusively from Canon on a first-come, first-serve basis (won't be available in stores). They will confirm your order and ship the camera to you. After a week or two, you will call them asking where your camera is, and they will tell you you already received it. That's because the Canon EOS Digital Garçon Limited Edition 60D is an imaginary camera, and its special function is that it uses your imagination to do anything you want it to do! You want it to take awe-inspiring, award-winning photos? Done! You want it to walk your dog? Done! You want it to make breakfast and coffee? Done! There's nothing it can't do since it uses your very own imagination!

The Canon EOS Digital Garçon Limited Edition 60D will be available starting at the same time as the 60D (no specific date has been decided yet) in a body-only configuration and will go for about $1500. I hear, however, that if you will it badly enough, you can have it immediately, and for free! It takes some masterful powers of imagination, but it can be done!

My source is very reliable. It's some dude who runs a website called CanonRumors, and I don't believe he has ever been wrong.

I like how people are going on about, "If there's going to be a <insert product here>, why hasn't it been announced / released yet?".

So there isn't going to be a 60D. But apparently neither a 1D replacement, a 1Ds replacement, a 5D replacement, 7D replacement, a 550D replacement, or a 1000D replacement, because none of them have been released / announced yet, going by your logic.

So it seems that that's the end of the line for Canon. You'll be dearly missed.

I'm picking up a 50D once the xxD series goes obsolete. Street value will plummet as used bodies saturate the mark as people cripple into the fear of owning "obsolete" technology.

I love the fact that the 50D doesn't have movie capabilities but improved yet still received the improved LCD and LV. I'd buy this body again just for the sole purpose of being able to use the Toki 11-16mm 2.8 again. I wish I never sold as it is no double what I paid for it. :/

It would make a good 16mm 2.8 prime on my 1Ds II as well.

Heck... what I find crazy as I'm watching auctions on ebay debating on what to buy... (as I'm still lulled by the bells & whistles of the 7d) I'm over it... I see 50D's and 5D's selling at the same or close to the same price. One can pick up both for the same price of a 7D and have the best of both worlds...

I agree 100%. For quality images high end body is not a must. It's the lens that makes the difference. However, consumer lenses can also capture great shots in good light. That's why the ground rule is; invest little on body and heavily (as per your affordability) on lenses.

BTW, 350D in unlikely to be available now I'm afraid. The minimum entry level model Canon dealers have in stock is the 500D. You might find one or two 450Ds in the gray market. Beyond that; it'll be a used one.

In fact Canon has a lot of homework to do or may be they are already busy with it. The immediate task at hand is; replacement of 1Ds Mark III as it's quite old now. However, replacing such a pro giant is not easy as it's still one of the most formidable contestants in the market that once sat at the top of the DSLR hill for quite some time. The high-end prosumer market can rest for a while with 7D in the shelves and entry level market with 550D and 500D. But what about xxD market? Well, as of now the 50D owners seem to be lucky.

Very strong point there. I've adopted this mentality right now (unless something happens that pushes me to FF). I just personally find the term "great images" highly subjective and overused to an extent but that's very sound advice for new buyers. I was shooting earlier today where I had to zoom in for composition and was limited to f/5.6, 1/15 at 55mm, I would've given anything to borrow a 2.8 or faster for some of those shots. Quality shots need quality glass. A better body would have done nothing unless it was full frame (I have issues trusting crop bodies in high ISO low light situations) but the better glass would have made a world of difference.

But what about xxD market? Well, as of now the 50D owners seem to be lucky.

I know it isn't much, but if Canon were to release a lower priced body between the T2i and 7D, that would free up maybe $200-300 towards a new lens. How likely is it that those savings will buy a quality lens? Depends on if you buy used. But some folks don't like the Rebel ergonomics and the 60D would be sort of a stepping stone where people can invest in lenses for future bodies. If they want a 7D, that's great, more power to them. If not, they can invest in EF or the equivalent from third party companies and prepare to go FF. There are some markets that many people don't think exist or will exist but they do and will. If Canon is purely concerned about profit, the 60D will just bring them more cash, I can't see it hurting anyone.

And if Canon were to do so, that would more-so mean trying to fill a gap in front of them and 5D series as well. The 3D will most definitely, as always, not directed compete with any opposing model of any other camera manufacturer. They have always taken the minimalist approach with their ergonomics and that's what makes Canons attracted to them over most modern cameras.

Sony has the power to really blow Nikon out of the water if they begin getting some good third-party contracts of even consignments for Pete's sake. I am very interested to see how seriously they approach the pro-level market because AF Zeiss lenses exclusively? That perk in itself is awesome.

I don't think head to head competition between Nikon and Canon is what either desire, both try to find a niche so that they avoid too much direct "point-for-point" scoring by the customer. The trouble is it's getting to be a very crowded market place, too many manufacturers trying to gain market share from each other which forces the feature sets closer and closer to the next model.

DSLR manufacturing is in the blood of Canon and Nikon which is why they jointly enjoy 80% share of this market. Olympus and Pentax are also old DSLR veterans albeit happy with smaller shares. However, the attempts of Panasonic, Samsung and Sony to enter this market offer food for thought but praiseworthy. Time will determine their destiny while DSLR users watch with interest.

Sony is leaving a pretty noticeable footprint on the dSLR world. If they're not selling the camera, they are making the sensors for the Nikons to use.

If Sony becomes aware of the appeal of fast primes (with autofocus exclusively for Sony on Carl Zeiss optics!), then I am going to be comparing Sony to Canon even more than I do now. Have you ever used on their vertical grip/battery expansion attachments? The do something I can't even describe. I hope Nikon (and most especially Canon) are watching this.

Sony is about get it hands in the micro 4/3rds system a bit dirtier with a sleeker body with very pleasurable ergonomics and a great, great screen. The fact that shipping with it in a package the 16mm 2.8 pancake lens (!!!) apparently in July at B&H (ref. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&N=0&Q=&Ntt=Sony+Nex-5&A=endecaSearch ).

Don't Sony make the LCD screens for Canon? I thought I'd read that under that plastic screen with the Canon logo is the real thing with Sony writ large. If they don't currently they certainly used to.

I've never quite understood why the 4/3rds system gets so much publicity. The media seem to love it. Heaven knows the 1.6 crop is small enough.

Yes, but people are less intimidated by ergonomics like the Sony NEX series in comparison to one of the first 4/3rds camera which looks like a toy dSLR...they're gonna go with the NEX and it's clear that's how Sony has directed their marketing.

As I said, DSLR users are watching with interest. As of now, being a Canon user I'd rather go for an Olympus or Pentax DSLR, if I have to, due to the same reason I prefer Nokia as a handset over other brands - reliability. It has to be built over time, there's no shortcut to it.

Does switching offer any change whatsoever? I don't think so. Who pays for the efforts of selling the existing setup and losses incurred? What's the guarantee that the switcher will get the things he/she craves that is unavailable with the present setup?

As, for myself being a Canon user, I will keep fighting with Canon to get the things I need. I'm positive that even if I don't get exactly what I want; sth close will be available. So, let me get out and take shots.

Quite happy with shots like this by entry level body and lens (EOS 450D + EFs 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS):

It will. In perfect conditions, the differences between models are small. What separates them is how they perform when the conditions are far from perfect.. What you have shown here so far, is quite far from what I would call pushing the gear to it's limits..

This is shot with the same gear as yours above.. Armstrong, O'Grady, Pellizotti, Hushovd, Arvesen & co doing 60km/h in a show-race during twilight... Slow camera + slow lens = blurry shot. Tell me why a "60D" maximized for low-light shooting, would not have performed better here..

Actually I reckon the blurred cyclists entering and exiting the turn makes the picture more dynamic, rather than having them un-blurred and still which would frankly, not really depict the mood of a race one bit. I'd have preferred this over a picture where they're all frozen.

Good question that warrants constructive discussion. In most of the cases challenging situation refers to low light conditions. For low light shootings u need a faster lens not a high-end body. Look at this night shot that I took with my 450D + Kit lens at 1600 ISO without flash. Most of the viewers simply loved it. However, if you want crystal clarity in this shot; bring me just the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens, I'll give u the shot u want with the same camera.

But seriously, if a "60D" would become the low-light camera I wish for, I could also see it appeal to a quite different market; professional armies. I served at the russian border for a year, and had the role as the lead scout in my team -and my main responsibility was the optics -and I carried LOTS of advanced optics worth an insane amount of money, but on the camera-front we were relatively weakly equipped, only with Canon G9's. But we got almost one G9 per soldier in my company, and we got them very shortly after it was released, so both Canon and the Norw. Army was definitely interested in a good cooperation. But during the polarnight-period the G9 was quite useless, but with the backpack already filled with 15-20kg of optics I certainly wouldnt mind bringing a dslr and a lens or two along as well, if it was specialized for low-light shooting and still relatively small and lightweight -and a crop body (no need for the FF's wider field of view when spying on russians across a border:p)

Just to give you an idea of the conditions, these are taken around noon in mid-december...

Fair enough too!

You know that first shot looks really good though :)

It would make sense to me if the army had a couple people only trained in taking the IR filter off the sensor of SLR's, you'd get much more sensitivity for sure. And much cheaper than that specialised gear you have - obviously nowhere as good and diff purpose obviously but a good addition to it.

The best 200 prime version features aperture f/2 and IS as well. Damage is quite heavy however, it will produce the otherwise missed images for sure. With this mounted on 50D set at ISO 3200, you will get a very fast shutter speed even for indoor sports shooting. A 450D at ISO 1600 (its highest) will also perform fairly well.

Reality is; with a high-end lens, the entry level DSLR will capture low light shots that will be difficult to distinguish from similar shots taken by the flagship 1Ds Mark III with same lens under same conditions.

One more point to note. We are talking about hobbyists; not pros. When the latter is included, we become listeners.

only problem was we didnt have any dslrs at all;-)

also;edit, just found out, none of those shots were from the G9:p they're from an Olympus P&S I had at that time.. anyway, aesthetically good pics doesnt necessarily work as good evidence of an observation or whatever;-) If all you can show is that there was a black dot in the landscape, in between all the other black dots, then its not very useful:p

I disagree with both of your premises. First, "challenging situations" doesn't always refer to "low-light conditions." The XSi body simply isn't as easy to use as a larger body. You can get used to it (I have...), but nothing will beat having two dedicated dials for aperture and shutter speed, respectively. I've frequently overlooked the top LCD screen, but that's a help, too. Throw into the mix the possibility of bad weather, and "challenging situations" is anything but low-light. How about dynamic range? Lesser cameras are more prone to clipping highlights, and a lot of the shots I considered "challenging" are precisely those that had too great a difference in the brights and darks.

Second, going back to your claim that low light means a faster lens is better -- even if the only challenging situation is low-light, the body *does* play an additional role beyond what the maximum aperture of the lens is. I have a friend who DJs, and the first time he DJed, I got away with shooting at ISO1600 and an f2.8 lens. His second venue is bigger, so I figured he'd be on a brighter stage -- but brought along my 50/1.8 just in case (that's 1 1/3 stop more light, right?). Unfortunately, he had *one* light on him -- a dim green bulb -- and even the 50/1.8 wouldn't cut it. ISO3200 from a 50D would have helped, and IS06400 from a 5DII would have been even better. Yes, I could have gone with a 50/1.4 or an 85/1.2, but that's still only one stop... ISO sensitivities could have gone up at least two stops.

The "better glass is great" mantra is a decent one, but it's not the end-all of photography. Having the best glass doesn't mean I'm going to get the shot (neither does haven't the best body); it's merely a component of taking the picture.

Joaaso
22nd of June 2010 (Tue), 09:43
^^also faster glass means thinner dof.. better low-light capabilities in the body/higher ISO can make it possible to stop down the aperture to get a bit more dof if you want that...

+1 A faster lens is great but does almost nothing when you need a deeper dof in low light. When you NEED 2.8 or greater, having a 1.4 lens isn't going to do anything, you need to bump the ISO. I was actually shooting like that the other day, I was taking some shots of an art collection and the deeper dof really helps on figures, vases, and other items like that. Museums the way they're lighted, I would have loved to have a nice, clean usable 3200 or what I'm really looking for, usable 6400 and I did find all that plus build quality and overall experience in a D700. Still need a crop body though and Canon makes some nice glass.

back up or use a wider fast lens.

Yes I understand that won't ALWAYS work, but for low low low low light, you need BOTH, so let them improve on the high end ISOs and I'll keep my fast glass. Each time I've upgraded in the last ~3 years (5D to 5Dii to D700) I basically picked up a stop of usable ISO. Each time I've thought 2.8 zooms or maybe even f/4 zooms might work. Each time I've stuck with my fast primes and just kept shooting later and later as the light dims.

Don't get me wrong, I love fast primes as much as the next guy, heck I love fast glass period :D

Just there are times where if you're on FF with a thinner dof, one side of an object might be in focus, the other may not be when you need both to be in focus. I don't know how much of a difference there is between 1.2 and 1.4 in close quarters, but I shot with a 50 1.4G (mounted on a D700) and that was probably the most fun with a lens I've had in quite a while :)

But my hero Ken Rockwell told me I don't need one. ;)

Ken Rockwell is my hero as well. Many people hate him likewise, he has many fans also with me being one of them. However, in this case I differ with him. Some great lenses are non IS like the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM or the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM. I have the latter and don't need either IS or tripod for my birding purposes bcos I always shoot birds at high shutter speeds wherein both these tools have no role to play. Being a nature shooter, I shoot wildlife and landscapes.

Now landscape shooting is a different story. Here slow shutter speeds are to be used with small apertures. 2 of Canon's good quality landscape lenses namely the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM and EF 17-40mm f/4L USM are non-IS. By making them non-IS, Canon seems to be indirectly advising us to use tripods for these lenses. It is always necessary to use tripods for non-IS lenses when used at slow shutter speeds. Even the mere use of tripod doesn't eliminate the shake risk entirely. Some other steps may also be necessary to snap a shake-free shot. ;)

The LR3 custom watermark feature is awesome IMHO. Saves a lot of hassles.

I always use tripods for landscape shots at slow shutter speeds and for long exposure shots it's a must. That's a policy.

When I use my kit lens for such shots, I switch the IS off after mounting the system on tripod.

Wait until the 60D comes out. If the Canonrumors.com dork says it’s coming out, then it’s coming out. He is never wrong.

This thread has made CanonGarcon so popular; he can run for presidency next time. Congratulations CG. You sure will have my vote. :D

I don't care when it comes out, just makes the control layout the same as my 40D so I can use a 40D underwater housing, and not have to cough up for a new one...

Yea, but he can't be called the 45th President, he'll have to be known as the "Next President".

Joaaso

He'll be the imaginary replacement of the current president..

So, probably the release of 60D will coincide with his ascending the throne. I'll shoot that event with my 50D comfortably.

There will not be a next president, if there was it would have been announced by now. I have never seen so many people in denial that the current president is the last of the series. The UN=President45 . For you that are numerologically superstitious about the President45, you may want to read the latest UN Charter. :)

New president? Blah! 45 is half of 90 of which 2/3 is 60 so therefore there can be no 45th president since we already have a 44th, and the only elections we'll ever need are the 2008 elections :p

lol

Haha that's full of win in a weird way

CG is still active in the forums even thought he's been absent from this thread. Do you guys miss him in here?

Someone go fetch him back! I don't think SN is done toying with him. :)

There already is a 45th President! The government just refuses to admit it!

Obviously, that works. But carrying a tripod is a real pain in the @$$.

I use one of the spider things, which is not as much of a pain to carry around, but tripods are a f' pain.

I'm actually begining to belive CG now that he's not here being all Garconian. :p I started thinking "I wish they could combine the 40D and T2i" and then I realised they already did. It's called the 7D. If only it didn't cost so darn much. I would definitely consider the 60D if it had all the features of the T2i and the usual xxD body and 6 fsp and a bit better AF.

I think the argument is still valid that the price range inbetween the rebels and 7D are too great... so there just gotta be a camera to fit in there... what it's called, we don't know.

You know what's almost exactly in between 550 and 7? 60! :D
