UPDATE: I decided to upgrade to 50D after all. I am actually more pleased with the camera than I thought I would be. It's a clear improvement, but I'd still like to see a big step forward with the 60D.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not so impressed with 50D. I think I'll wait for the next one before biting.

Here are a few suggestions for what I hope to see in a 60D around late 2009 or early 2010:

(in no particular order)

1. improved sensitivity. Let's see ISO6400 with expansion to 12800.

We should also have an in-camera option for noise reduction that should at least achieve the sort of performance I can get easily with Noise Ninja.
STOP increasing pixel density and focus more on sensitivity and noise reduction!!!2. Built-in GPS

Tag photos with coordinates and maintain accurate camera clock.3. Touch screen capability

Perhaps we could eliminate a few buttons and leave more space for display.
iphone-like pan and zoom4. Fingerprint sensor with integrated joystick functionality

Already present on cell phones in Japan. these are starting to show up on consumer electronics such as GPS units from Medion. The fingerprint sensor can be used to lock the camera and thus make it less attractive to a thief. The navigation (joystick) functionality is quite sufficient to replace the existing joystick.
For anyone who shares a camera, the sensor can readily distinguish between different individuals and load personal settings. This is just like the car keyfobs that preset seat and mirror settings for different drivers.5. Internal processing for high dynamic range

As Moore's law continues to play out, we should see very significant improvements in internal processing capability. Why not incorporate exposure blending or other HDR techniques to expand dynamic range?6. HD Video recording with support for external microphone.

I consider this one to be mandatory for my next DSLR purchase. I have a Canon HD camcorder already, but I want similar capability in a package that can benefit from my SLR lenses.
As long as we're adding video with its corresponding audio support, why not add a voice recording option that would enable storage of comments tagged to a photo?7. Is it time to consider SD Memory?

I'm not too concerned about this one, but you have to wonder how much longer we'll stick with these relatively large compact flash devices.8. Face detection option should also be able to utilize skin tone to tune white balance.

Face detection for AF is becoming more popular, especially in the point-N-shoot category. If Canon adds this to the 60D, then perhaps it would help to also be able to fine-tune white balance based on the skin tone. I often shoot in AWB mode, then tweak in Photoshop elements using the adjust color for skin tone tool. It's quick and very effective without using RAW files.9. Integrated WiFi

Hey, if a $300 iPod Touch can have it, why not my $1200 camera?
Direct-to-flickr shooting?
10. Oh yeah....better low light AF and more reliable AF overall.

Ultra fast contrast auto focus. This eliminates the need for a shutter and allows the focus point to be moved anywhere on the screen.
Super high res electronic viewfinder. This eliminates the both mirrors and pentaprism and allows for things like live view functionality in the viewfinder.
Flash sync to 1/8000.
Square sensor thus eliminating the need for ever having to turn a camera 90 degrees.
Viewfinder out port. This allows me to place the camera on the ground and use my Zen or some other PDS as an external viewfinder. This way I don’t have to crawl in the dirt to get that macro shot.

I hope for a 20 MPixels APS-C sensor for the 60D. How the hell those 5D/1D/1Ds cameras with their low-pixel density sensors can produce such amazing images? Are the owners of these cameras know they are stuck with the low-tech sensors? ;-)

Great point on the electronic viewfinder. I've often wondered when that might happen. Imagine the improvement in reliability if we can get rid of some of the moving parts. However, they'll need to really work on low-power consumption to make this happen. The old-fashion viewfinder essentially burns no power and produces no heat. In live view, there's quite a bit of power consumed and supposedly the sensor can overheat.

Square sensor idea is a good one too, but it seriously increases cost.

Here's an idea for autofocus...track the pupil and focus on the spot that the photographer is looking at in the viewfinder. I know for sure that such tracking systems exist, but I don't know how much processing they require.

Hey...if we had that, could we shift the focal plane and get 10 MP with a crop factor of around 2.2 (1.4 x 1.6)? Or maybe a 30 MP full format sensor that can also work as a 10MP crop sensor camera? Call it the 65D.

I wonder why they dropped it? Probably more complex and costly that it was worth.

1. higher ISO would be useful.
2. GPS would be ok. I usually just write down where I was.
3. I detest touch screens. When Sony made their camcorder menus touch screens, I told myself I wouldn't ever buy one. I never owned one, but I can't stand having to clean any screen. I don't like when people at work touch my monitor screen.
4. A thief has no idea if a camera has fingerprint technology. My car stereo was stolen even though I had the detachable face in my house!
5. This would be my most used option, but I don't know how the camera would know how to do this.
6. I don't care about video in my camera. When I take video on trips I would need probably hundreds of GB of memory and certainly don't want to buy that much.
7. please no SD! Those things are so tiny. I can hardly imagine trying to find one of those in my camera bag or worse, in my backpack when traveling. The CF cards do not seem "large" in my opinion.
8. I don't care about face detection since I don't take pictures of people.
9. don't care about wi-fi. don't use flickr.
10. better low light AF would be awesome.

7. Is it time to consider SD Memory?

YES! My laptop has a slot for an SD card (as do most computers these days). It would be so much easier to just stick the card into the computer rather than having to get the card reader out of the drawer, plug in the USB, stick the Compact Card into the card reader, then put the card reader back in the drawer.

Remember, they're going to redesign the XXD line, so I'd expect HD video with whatever I got, but I really don't want it to be honest.

I would like:

12 megapixels
7 fps (not enough to be the 1D, but above the 40D)
seperate ISO dial somewhere (think G10)
better body design (I know it's the XXD, but it's so bulky and boxy)

Basically, that's all I want.

Do you really think a touch screen would require any more cleaning than the current one? Mine gets smudged every time I take a picture. It picks up oils from my face.

Currently, if your LCD sh*ts the bed, you lose the ability to review images but can still shoot.

If you were to lose a touch screen LCD where potentially, controls would live, you'd lose the ability to change those controls.

IMO, leave the LCD as a viewing screen and not a controlling device.

Well if i remember photokina last year, Canon said in an interview that the HD video from the 5D II will be filtering down to the xxD line next.

I don't think mpx will go down that much, if at all, remember its a marketing ploy to rich idiots, who buy dslrs because they have more money than sense. So probably 15.1mpx, staying from the 50D (ala 20D-30D) or it'll hit the 20+ marker.

Id prefer to keep the sensor from the 50D with the gapless microlenses and boost up the ISO a bit.

A new AF system would be welcomed but after seing how the 5D II didn't get boosted that much, I wouldn't hold my breath that much, maybe a 13 point AF,

They might go to SD, but I'd be more sure on it remaining CF.

GPS could be added as a gadget just to make the feature list longer.

The 1 year product cycle will remain, so expect it in august, Canon need to make enough of a change with the 60D to make it worth buying compared to its ancestor, I have a 40D at the moment and see no need to get a 50D.

I'm pretty impressed with the 50D. The noise at 100% seems to be similar to my 30D, but with nearly double the MPs. Most people hate it, but I seem to be one of the few who works well with this setup. I don't shoot high ISO that often, but I require a solid AF and lots of MPs, so the 50D fit my needs perfectly.

For the 60D, realistically I'd like:

- Faster flash sync
- HD movie mode with contrast detect AF (not too difficult to implement)
- 8fps
- A new battery grip which has the AF-joystick
- MPs staying at 15 but improved sensor for cleaner ISO 800
- Improved anti-dust
- ISO 50

I'm quite happy with that. Most people wouldn't be, but that's all I'd want, realistically.

12mp sensor with weaker AA-filter (= better high iso while providing about the same detail level as the 50d's sensor)

Full-HD movie mode with 24p/25p support and manual controls (without having to use any tricks)

At least 98% viewfinder coverage (100% would be nice but Canon seems to reserve it for the 1-series)

Same or better viewfinder magnification as the 50d (combined with the higher coverage = bigger viewfinder)

More custom settings (C1, C2 etc.), less scene modes

Integrated GPS (with the ability to disable it via the menu, of course, to preserve battery power when needed)

Keep the buttons (I wouldn't mind touch controls as an addition to the normal controls, though)

No fingerprint sensor (just another thing to go wrong at the worst possible moment)

At least 98% viewfinder coverage (100% would be nice but Canon seems to reserve it for the 1-series) Thr trouble with making an optical viewfinder bigger is that it gets darker as well. It's the nature of the optical beast. That's why an electronic VF would be great. You could make it optically look the size of a film SLR VF or even larger without any optical degradation at all. Heck, you could make it look the size of a movie screen. :)

Hmm... I don't think a higher viewfinder coverage would make it darker, only a bigger magnification would.

As for electronic viewfinders: Probably the future but I haven't seen a good one yet, so I'd stick to an optical viewfinder for the time being.

If you look at some of the higher end video cameras they have some pretty decent VFs. The technology exists and it is just mow headed to the SLR market. -Dual card slots (one could be SD, why not as long as they keep CF too)
-Color space bracketing
-Actual weather sealing
-Sensor near the LCD that turns it off when your face is near the screen (yes just like the XTi )
-Electronic gird lines in the viewfinder that can be turned on/off (just like Nikon )
-No more dumb features like CA mode or face detection, give us C3 back (wouldn't hurt to do away with the scene modes too like landscape, flash-off, night portrait, etc...)

One at a time.
1. The 50D already does have just as good or better noise perforence then the 40D does and is 4 years better then my 20D. Pop Photo's test showed it to be better then the D300 and 40D, except at 100ISO(but not my enough to matter).
2. GPS in my opinion is useless. I know where I am when I take the picture, so why should I need to see the exact spot that I was?
3. Touch Screens are nice, but the camera was not meant to be used like a phone/PDA. I have a PDA for that, I have a DSLR for taking pictures. Touch screens are not as nice as everyone things they are, I use them on my PDA and on my tablet.
4. Wont help theif any. Most people will steal thing that have almost no value just to steal them. I had my camaro broken into a few months ago, and they took the $.99 window squeegee I had in it, but left the $300 PDA that was on top of it.
5. That would add something else to forget I have on to ruin more of my shots. If you want to do HDR images, post processing is still going to do better then in camera. The camera is not that powerful, will take a while to do it and computers based algorithms are much better.
6. I bought a $2000 still camera to take stills with, I have a $1000 HD video camera to take video. I only have like 16gb on space, so HD video will eat that up really fast.
7. I would have to buy all new memory cards at that point. CF cards are not that much bigger and being bigger, you can cram more sectors into them with out having to wait for tech to be better. Or you can by the SD to CF adapter.
8. I shoot raw so thing mean nothing to me. I still shot with a Mamiya RB67 and a 8x10 view camera. I usually just set up a shot with the 20D and then make a better version with the medium/ large format film.
9. I shoot raw, and there are not many sites that will edit full sized raw files the same way I can in Photoshop.
10. This will take time as even the top of the line 1 series bodies are not there yet.

Direct-to-flickr shooting?10. Oh yeah....better low light AF and more reliable AF overall.

As I suspected, you actually don't OWN a 50D. And BTW I would not consider buying a body with the specs/fluff you have listed. Sorry to takers.

out of those 10 things listed there are only 2 things I would want which is 1 & 10

the rest of it I doubt will happen other than #6 of video

and they are not going to make it a FF not everyone wants that + it will increase the cost to much

Along the lines of the memory card slot, why not alienate their current xxD compadres and just make it a dual card slot? Then, you can choose your card based on what you have.

I guess Im a simple soul... I just want the camera to be the best "camera" it can be and nothing more. I dont want many bells and whistles.

1. Weather sealing!!!!!!
2. improve the AF some, maybe add some more points if it improves av servo performance
3. improve the noise in higher iso's.....
4. NO MORE MP's!!! 15 is enough on a cropbody for now
5. 8fps
6. Larger viewfinder

Those things alone would make me happy :)

A better AF : more accurate, better in tracking and more AF points.
Less Noise.
Less useless mode like the running man mode.
better IQ.
Aperture bracketting, speed bracketting.

PS : I haven't upgraded my 40D to the 50D. I don't thing it's worth it.

After having used my 50D for a couple of months there are only two things that would get me to upgrade, well, three things. All the other features are like GPS, touch screen, build in HDR, WiFi are nice but I wouldn't jump on the camera. My three features are:
1. If they upgraded the focus system to something a bit more pro level. Maybe not the full 45 of the 1D, but something more than the 9 of the Rebels. Maybe an additional ring around the center point making it 17 points. Of course the 1D system would be just fine as well.
2. If they significantly reduced the size like Panasonic has done. Get rid of the mirror, VF, pentaprism and put in a truly high quality electronic VF with all kinds of amazing features that are just impossible with optical VFs. Features like night vision allowing you to focus in complete darkness, high contras B/W so that manual focusing is simple, 10x zoom so that you can get that perfect critical focus and such.
3. If they introduced a new sensor technology that really had much better performance than today's CMOS chips. I think we have pretty much reached the technological limits of CMOS and the improvements will be so slight as to be meaningless. A new technology which allows for a significant jump in IQ and performance would get me to upgrade.

@ Gjl711 : the size of a 40/50D is okay for me. Lots of people buy a xxD instead of a xxxD do it because they don't like the small size of the little xxxD.

@ Gjl711 : the size of a 40/50D is okay for me. Lots of people buy a xxD instead of a xxxD do it because they don't like the small size of the little xxxD. Ah.. but thats where Canon could get clever. Offer a small camera with 1D capability for those that are image and feature concious to those where size is a detriment and put the same camera in a big body that like it large for those where size is an advantage. :) But thats never going to happen I'm afraid.. :(

So I've been thinking what could Canon realistically do to get me to upgrade. I've been using my 50D for a couple of months now and in all honesty it is about everything I could want from a camera. I really haven't come up with a single feature with the possible exception of a more pro-like AF. 9 points is just too few. If Canon popped in a say 17 point or 21 point system, I might concider selling off the 50 and moving to a 60.

I find it surprising - the number of HD movie buffs around! Seems such a useless feature to me on a still camera.

I'd like to see Canon get a few things right before introducing new gimmicks into their xxD lineup for the sake of "competition". Seems to me by being "competitive", Canon is indirectly conceding a leadership role to other manufacturers. Instead, it would be nice to see Canon take the bull by the horns and introduce a kick-a$$ camera in terms of super IQ/usability that would compell other manufacturers to follow suit

1) - improve software by adding button control flexibility/customization (instead of just a "my menu" ... why bury functions in menus?? )
2) - weather sealing
3) - quit adding MP for comptetion's sake and instead truly improve IQ. 15MP on a 1.6 is already enough, image quality suffers as a result
4) - improve AF: reduce "zoom creep" improve low-light AF (already good, but could be much, much better)
5) - increase AF points
6) - better high ISO capability (goes hand-in-hand with point 2 above)
7) - keep "CA" mode away from all their cameras. The dummy-mode green auto setting is enough. Having two such settings is simply useless. Add more C functions to the dial instead.
8 ) - ... and for goodness sake - improve the WB already!!
9) - oh ... did I mention proper weather sealing??

What I'd like to see added/kept is:
1) - A= eye-tracking AF points (like the Elan7e had - excellent feature)
2) - K= keep lens micro-adjustment
3) - K= external flash control

... can't think of anything more at this time...

Bah, who am I kidding, all the above is wishful thinking. Can't forget that Canon makes cameras for two groups: pros and for everyone else, difference being ~$5000... Serious amateurs be damned.

Would be nice to have a lineup in between the xxD and the 5D series that would incorporate some of the above with just enough "real" features to keep the soccer moms and dads disinterested but enough to satisfy those that really enjoy photography. Wait a sec... isn't the xxD series already target the serious amateurs? Then why play the "increased" megapixel game when it's clearly getting to the point of nonsense based on the law of diminishing returns? I suppose the answer goes back to the original point made regarding "competitiveness".

Sorry folks, a bit of a rant.

Truth be told the XXXD and the XXD are way too close in performance. Sure it's bigger, heavier, has an extra dial, and maybe a feature or two, but it is still a consumer grade camera parading as something more. Give us a real pro-sumer body, more than a xxxD in not only looks but performance as well.

I'm very pleased with the 50D, but if I were to make a wish list...

1. A fully articulated LCD screen. Live view with a screen that rotates would be far more comfortable to use for macro/odd angle shots.

2. More focus points would be nice.

3. More FPS can never hurt.

4. Canon has been in need of a serious overhaul of their Auto White Balance since the original Rebel. I can live with shooting in RAW and fixing fixing white balance in post, but I shouldn't have to.

5. I wouldn't mind a video mode. It would be more of a toy than a useful feature to me, but with the excellent live view (with face detection... what's up with that?) and if #1 on my list, a fully articulated screen was in place... might as well.

One touch spot metering button.
The trouble with that is ALL of us have individual wants/needs for buttons dedicated to a certain function. I think we're more likely to see a dedicated mirror lock up (or custom function to set it) before we are metering. How hard is it to push a button and rotate a wheel to change metering? Mirror lock up makes you go into the menus though.

If you put MLU in My Menu, access is very quick. Without My Menu, I would agree - a dedicated button would be a world apart from having the function clogged up somewhere in Custom Functions. On the other hand, spot metering is probably something more useful to the masses. Personally I'd like a dedicated spot metering button, which switches from whichever metering mode I'm on now to spot metering. Then a second click takes me back. For me, that would be Evaluative to Spot Metering. Second click takes me back to Evaluative.

I'd also like to see a dedicated button for Quality. Currently I've 'kinda' set it to Set. That is, I set Set to the QC screen. Func is out of the question as I've already used that for AEB. An easy solution would be Canon making the Picture Styles button to be customisable. This request isn't priority though, since I've got Quality in My Menu already and it's 'good enough'.

Neither is hard to do. I think more people by far are presented with the situation where spot metering would be useful over a situation where MLU would be (think tripod & release).

I like this idea.

My reasoning for this is that I never have to move the camera away from my eye. If I see through the viewfinder that I need to spot meter, I press a thumb button (or whichever),take the picture then press it again.

Well, I'm currently using a 20D, so the feature set in the 50D is awesome in comparison anyway (I don't even have spot-metering...), but I guess some ideal features that haven't been seen yet in the xxD series that I would like too see are wireless control with the built in flash, improved buffer (not so much for fps speed, but for longer continuous shooting), better weather-sealing, and why not a wireless shutter release?

10. Oh yeah....better low light AF and more reliable AF overall.

i too am waiting for a new 60D to come out. did you see the new patent's by canon for their video auto focusing system?

10. better AF system - high five!

2. HD space is cheap.. and you realise metadata increases the filesize negligibly? Sorry, it's just funny hearing you complain about this when you're not absolutely screaming for the extra HD space you'd need for the extra MPs. You know each 50D RAW file is around 20MB? A little extra metadata isn't going to hurt anybody.

7. I sense you're the type of guy who is afraid of change.

9. Well, you don't have to use it. When it's off, no extra power is consumed.

11. Too bad they're gonna change it and we both know it. ;)

1) Improved sensitivity. Yes please
2) GPS. I can't wait for this feature! Too many times now I've been looking at old family photo's and not known where they were taken. The photographer may know, but quite often the photographer is not accessible. Also I have a tendancy to go out with friends/family who are not as patient as I am in waiting for the right light. Being able to fire off a quick snap to record the location and then return later would be a real plus. Paper gets soggy, lost and isn't attached to the image. Metadata is.
3) Touch screen. Meh.
4) Fingerprint sensor. Meh.
5) In camera HDR. Meh. That's like asking for in camera photoshop... Let the camera take the images and the computer do the processing.
6) HD video. Meh. I can see this coming on all cameras soon. I doubt it's a feature I'll use.
7) SD cards. I expect it'll happen. Personally prefer the larger Flash cards. They're harder to lose/drop.
8 ) Face detection. Again, I doubt it's a feature I'll use.
9) Integrated wifi. Less wires. Definately useful.
10) Improved AF. Yes please.

Improved AF: yes!!!!!!!!! (lots of improvments please) I wear glasses but not all the time.. and under specific conditions I dont trust it...

better built in consumer cameras: yes!! its good for our psychology and good marketing trick to tap some people (including me), compared to... models

fps: yes but not too much.. 6-7 is ok for its lvl.

copyright protection : yes!! (it makes us feel secure.. even if were not!)

face detection: yes..

tilt and swivel screen: No.. because it gives a video camera feeling.. dont like it.

video: I dont care, a good extra if it dont conflicts with the overall system..

mp: 15-21mp with improved noise system and improved iso lvl(well I dont care about 12800 iso+ after all, its extreme for me, maximum 6400)

bracketing: please improve it! more than 3 pics... 5 is ok.. for hd conversion.

gps: yes

wifi: no.. whats the use of it.. surf the net? play video games..!! yes!!!!

touch screen..: NOT even think about it!.. Dirty fingers and fingertips all over it.. Scratches and all the rest.. As far as I can imagine it. Plus many bugs or faulty screens... Can u just imagine that??

and the list goes on..

some more clicks?? more than 50000-100000? (is going to kick all competitors miles behind..)

oh yes.. 2 year guarantee.. (i heared this is the next year plan?).

50 iso as standard instead of boost in consumer products..? (its amazing indeed.. And I would love to see from canon first - iso 25 or something, i miss that film).. At least in 1d series!! :)

My heart lies with the XXXD series, because of the compactness. Nothing to do with hand size, but everything to do with portability.

I have a wish list for the next rebel (500D/XRi), but some of those would apply to the 60D as well:
1) Like the GPS idea
2) of course better AF
3) Faster speed
4) I would love for my camera body to have light up buttons, similar to the way cell phones have them. Not overly bright, but the word "menu" or "jump" will have enough glow to ease the operation in the dark. Perhaps a "light" button that illuminates all buttons for 15 seconds and then blacks out again, just for when you need that quick glance in the dark.
5) Weather sealing of course
6) Should come standard with an L bracket, or just have a tripod mounting hole on two sides (now that would be a real first, eh?)
7) ISO 50
8 ) More intelligent auto ISO in all modes
9) the ability to customize the function of every button. (I would take my friends camera and assign the shutter button to direct-print. Ha hA!)
10) built in command for wireless flash control. I can't believe we don't have this yet.
11) improved rubbery grip.
12) More fine tuning of picture styles.
13) built in 8GB or more of storage, in case you forget your cards.
14) Please, no more increase in MP. I have enought already, thank you!

- Video costs Canon nothing hardwarewise to put into the 60D. The 60D has to have video to at least match the D90. I doubt I'd use it much though.
- More AF points
- Better IQ, higher ISO range.
- Radio based wireless flash control. Come on Canon, you can do this.
- Metadata tagging

Stuff Canon might put in but I won't use
- Face detection
- More MP. Please stop. Put better IQ than better MP. Already burning through DVDs at the 40D's 10MP.

Stuff Canon should not do.

If they're planning on redesigning the entire series, then nothing you guys are saying is going to happen.

Knowing Canon, they'll get professionals by making it weather sealed. Why not? Nikon has a cheap weather sealed model and we don't want to have to pay $4000 for the 1 series cameras. Other than that, they're just going to change everything around. Hopefully they'll put in a swivel screen, whether you guys like it or not, it makes money, and for a camera the size of that, it fits.

While I can see the merits of a swivel screen, I feel that it compromises the rigidity and makes weathersealing all that much more difficult. With the rough conditions some DSLRs have to work in, swivel screens can and will break.

That's a fair argument (although if you're in one of those situations, don't swivel the screen, it's not as though you HAVE to swivel it). It's probably not a suggestion Canon would actually implement, but they could make a snap on screen (with a rubber gasket around it) that covers the actual LCD.

Direct-to-flickr shooting?10. Oh yeah....better low light AF and more reliable AF overall.

1. The 50D did this, but I would prefer to see the 60D at 12 mpx and not something stupid like 16 or 20 or 30. 12 is all you need, 8 is all you need. It should've stopped at 12 and stayed at 12 with the original 5D. 6400-12800 would be usable if the 50D was 10 mpxs or 8.
2. I think this feature is definitely needed.
3. I don't like this idea because my nose always presses up against the LCD and I fear damaging my LCD by pressing it too hard. Instead of this feature, I would like to see a screen that I can rotate out and shift around like on the sony cameras.
4. What about re saleability of the camera, though? How would one get around that ? It's a good idea but needs some work.
5. Don't we already have this? Exposure bracketing? In the place of this feature I suggest having the ability to shoot in TIFF format which the 1-series cameras have the ability of.
6. Sure, would be cool.
7. NO!!!!!!! What about us who spent 500-1000 $ in 4-16 GB CF cards?
8. Read below
9. Eh...what about shooting in RAW? We'd all have really crap looking unedited photos. I think in the place of this feature we should have in camera processing so we don't have to do much editing later on.
10. Always

I seriously think that some people have never even shot a pre-50D camera if they think the ISO hasn't been improved over the predecessors.

Seriously, have you guys ever used these cams or do you just talk about them? It blows my mind how the quest for better features is never satisfied. 3 years ago people would've laughed for someone to want 1600 ISO usable ...today they want 6400 ISO usable, and 12800. 1600 ASA film is barely usable, it should be blessing enough to have it clean on a 5D mark II ...sheeesh..no pleasing people, I should really cop out of this forum before my head explodes.

I just though of this while shooting last night, but I think it would be great if when shooting with a speedlite they could put the pilot light in the viewfinder info. I'd find it useful if I could just see if my flash is recycled though the viewfinder info instead of taking my eye off the camera to check it and lose my composition when not using a tripod.

Three things I'd like to see in the next body.

1. Work on the sensor to make significant advances in it's ability to capture detail. Since this level is used as an intermediate sport/action shooter, get 1600 ISO super clean

2. Advance the shooting speed. I'd pay an extra $200 premium if canon did Dual Digic or advanced the FPS to 8.

3. 19 point AF. with a smaller similar Ring of Fire. Since this is an intermediate sports/action shooter, I'd pay for the AF over anything else.

Canon may not want to get a super clean high ISO to keep people buying fast lenses. A 2 stops faster shutter speed through higher (useable) ISO means an f/ 2 lens can be replaced with a cheaper f/4 lens. Of course dof and sharpness come into play too.

I think that the XXD cameras are pretty good right now, so I just want a couple of things.

1. 12MP (will never happen)
2. Since it won't go down in MP, I think it should stay where it is at now, but with a new sensor that improves dynamic range and high ISO noise.
3. allow the "direct print" button to serve as MLU and go back to using the "set" button for liveview or vice versa. Have custom functions for this.
4. Get ride of Creative Auto and go back to the 3rd custom setting.
5. Better autofocus system (passed down from 1D series or even somewhere in between)
6. True weather sealing.
7. Faster flash sync speed
8. Faster shutter speed (8 fps would be great)

I'm new. Hi. =)

First off, I have a 30D, and I am totally devoted to it. I carry it EVERYWHERE and have shot with it so much that I am literally waiting for the shutter to die. So, that said, yeah, I am waiting for the next xxD camera. Though the 50D is impressive, it's still not improved enough to make me want to pony up for its successor just yet. Let me add some thoughts here... I'll focus on what I think hasn't been said, yet.

First, GPS, yes. It seems reasonable that not everyone would want it. So how about making a standardized internal plugin port (it'd only have to be the size of an SD slot) and work with the device manufacturers to create compatible devices for those that want it. IT'S BEEN PROMISED TOO LONG. If you can't imagine what you'd use it for, then you haven't seen Google Maps recently-- it can place geotagged images along your route. Soon you will even be able to sync the images by time of day and season. And soon, automatic stitching software will turn the world into a virtual tour paradise. GPS exif data will help with this. Very important.

Wow. I can't believe anyone wouldn't want WiFi in their camera. The 60D should be like the Microsoft Zune-- once it gets in range of the computer it's sync'd with, presto, Lightroom opens and the pictures start leeching into the PC for processing. WiFi would rule. This is the 21st century. Why am I still plugging in a cord or taking out my memory cards? This feature would enable us to access our cameras remotely. Or control them with other devices, like iPhones, laptops, GMRS radios, cell phones, whatever. Which leads us to:

OPEN SOURCE. It's HIGH time to plug the CHDK-style hackers making scripts into the SLR world. It's a joke how much innovation and creativity remains untapped in this segment of the shooting community: Motion detection for lightning strikes, interval scripts, remapping of functions and the ability to add new functions. We all love Canon. But it's time for us to stop waiting for and being thankful for everything Canon gives us. The 60D may be a camera, but to a large extent, it's also a computerized "image detection device" that can potentially do much more than Canon's engineers think it can do. It should also be able to serve some very obscure and specialized needs (astrophotography, wildlife, weather, etc).

Some other stuff:

ISO, ISO, ISO. If I can't shoot clean at 6400, the 60D is a no-go for me. Period. It's why I'm sticking with my still serviceable 30D. Face it: IS lenses were just a stop-gap measure to bump shooters up a couple F-stops. It's an electronic band-aid and considering how the 5D2 shoots, IS lenses are a joke. I try not to use them (battery consumption) but ISO performance is still bad in the 30D.

AF. AF. AF. Holy cow, AF. The AF systems in Canons these days are LITERALLY inexcusable. And the AF has to be SMARTER, too. When my last shot was at 30m, why seek down to macro before locking back at 28m?

MP? Who cares. We have enough, now.

SD? CF? How about both? With WiFi, we won't care much. If you can't afford $40 for an 8GB SDHC card, why are you chomping at the bit for a $1600 60D???

I don't like the touch screen idea myself, but I'd love to be able to navigate pictures like the iPod touch, simply by lightly jerking the camera left and right. Or what if the touch screen could be toggled on and off? Let's use our imaginations. It could be implemented in a way we could embrace and find usable. Don't dismiss this powerful feature outright.

Better sealing for sure. Lighter body would be nice, too.

Lower weight. I can't believe anyone would even suggest replacing the SLR with an internal viewfinder or an external swivel screen. Get a Sony if you don't want an SLR. Get a Canon G-series if you want a swivel screen. I want an awesome SLR, not a camera to do every little thing poorly.

Sure hope the DIGIC 5 flies. Canon blames IO for the fact that, in the field, we typically can only get about 10 RAW files into the buffer before we're waiting around. At 6fps, that's not very much of a buffer. But I think the real bottleneck is the cache. There's not enough of it.

Does anyone think Canon will make a camera that has upgradable electronics?

It'd be great if the buttons would light up internally for night shooting.

That's all I can think of right now.

Just without auto focus... I can't understand why people want this in a still cam when they can get an HD camcorder that acts how a camcorder is supposed to act, autofocus and all. I mean I'm not saying I'm against video on SLR's (we already have live view, it doesn't take much more to tell the camera to record what it's seeing), I just don't see it as a big selling point when you're stuck with practically no autofocus.

video is handy only for weddings and some family momments.. thats all.. still camera will never be a video camera at the same time.. I believe cmos sensors are in the top lvl of progress.. so Its better to think when a new cmos or whatever will come and capabilities will have.. than video + photography... video for still cameras is s...d by me.. Companys should put that in specific models for wedding photographers and some kind of photo reporters..

Maybe a nice future for reporters is to have a camera that transfers instantly through a sattelite system their images, with just 1 button... and earn time without have to carry laptops or whatever.. this is more handy than the video you need..

Something I don't want on the 60D is another grip with additional features(like the current wifi grip). Either give us the features in the camera or don't do it at all but I don't want to spend another $900 to get the features as an add-on and I don't want them in place of a battery grip.

So the things I do want is built in wifi and maybe a built in vertical shutter button. SD instead of CF would be ok as long as someone builds an adaptor to use SD cards in our older CF bodies (like the mini sd to micro sd adaptor).

In fact, I hope -- really -- that Canon's next 50D firmware update includes video functionality. I'll be disappointed it doesn't; you can't release the Rebel version of the 50D with more functionality than the 50D... you just can't.

To me, though, this is more a matter of allowing customers who decided to purchase the more expensive model feel like they got value for money. The 1 month old T1i should not have features that the older 5DMkii has but that the 6 month old 50D lacks. It makes the 50D owners feel like they got ripped off, especially considering the DIGIC 4 processor, which is in all three of the cameras I just mentioned, is capable of doing video and that all Canon would need to do to enable video on the 50D is release a firmware update.

It's mostly about keeping a rationally constructed price tier system. You have four levels of bodies; Rebel, xxD, 5 series, 1 series. If a lower tier seems to offer more features for the price, then purchasers of the higher tiers are going to feel that they spent money on a higher tier and got less in some respects than the lower tier members. When you fly first class, you get all the perks of coach class and then some. When you upgrade your cruise ticket to a higher class, you have access to all areas of the ship that lower class members have, in addition to new, more exclusive areas. When you buy a tier 2 Canon camera and 5 months later Canon releases a tier 1 clone of your camera that has more features at a 30% discount, purchasers of tier 2 cameras feel like they're being taken for suckers. Especially when you consider that the functionality we're talking about is more up to Canon simply granting access (through firmware) -- it's not like enabling video would cost anything beyond firmware development, which they have a team working on all the time regardless.

I think that the problem is that the xxxD and the xxD series are just too close in functionality in the first place. They are really the same camera with a different packaging, hence the perception problem. The 50D and the new T1i are a great example. The T1i lacks microfocus why? Just because Canon wants to give the 50D guys something to hang on to? It's silly.

It's time for Canon to really differentiate the two bodies. Give us enthusiests something more than a bigger body with a metal shell. Pop in the 1.3 sensor, better AF, something tangable and not just silly software features.

And it's also not like maybe there are licensing issues on the codec that compresses the videos (H.264) that are factored into the cost of the 5D Mark II and T1i but not into the 40D and 50D. In an ideal world it would just be the cost of man hours for firmware development, but there are so many things that make the ideal world not the real world. ;)

"Canon" and "rational" in the same sentence--never make that mistake. Canon don't do rational. Their product lineup has all sorts of idiosyncrasies. Take the 5DII for instance. Price-wise it's between the 50D and 1DIII so you'd more or less expect it to have features and performance consistent with that price level. Not so; not even close. The cheaper 50D has more cross-type AF sensors (9 vs. 1, or 3 if you count the assist points) and significantly higher frame rate than the 5DII. The 5DII has a larger and better performing sensor than the 1DIII as well as HD video. You see, Canon's lineup is already so non-linear. What's one more odd bird thrown in the mix?

And the Rebel line eclipsing the XXD line is a long and storied tradition. Witness the XTi's 10MP sensor and cleaning system over the 30D's 8MP and no cleaning, or the XSi's 12 vs. the 40D's 10. It's debatable whether those are real benefits, but on paper the Rebel line has often trumped it's bigger brother at the time in the XXD line in certain areas. None of this should come as a surprise. It's just Canon being Canon.

I think when you take into account the release dates for the each model in the lineup, everything starts to make more sense.

The thinking is just flawed. Right now most people think..."Higher priced camera=better camera". You need to change that thinking over to reality.... "newer model=better camera". Whatever your description of "better" might be.

As it would seem I am one of the FEW 50D owners/users posting here, I have some observations/questions for the group.

Why do some want ISO 50? It is my understanding that the sensor is built to be sensitive at it's base ISO rating. If this is true then an ISO 50 sensor would be 1 full stop SLOWER than the same sensor built to perform at ISO 100. Nikon has built their D300sensor to be an ISO 200 sensor. Thus it has cleaner High ISO performance.
So I see no real world value in ISO 50 "IF" what I said is in fact true. Hopefully someone more informed will correct me or add to what I said.

Next is why add WiFi? With the file sizes that the 50D or it's replacement will be producing, unless one was shooting small JPEGs, it would take all day to get it over to your WiFi Home. I say skip this one too and give me something I will be able to use in the real world.

I love the 50D. It is what I had hoped for coming from my 20D. However, I must have real weather sealing, as a semi-pro body will be used in much harsher conditions and thus needs to be fully sealed. Nikon does Canon MUST TOO!!!

It seems the rumor mill is settled on the 60D as having the same 15.1 MP sensor with Digic V. This is fine with me. Lets get a TRUE 1 stop minimum noise improvement. 2 stops would be better but not likely. So 1 stop would be fine.

Rumor also says 4 assists AF points will be added. This "in theory" should help but In practice who knows? I would like to see 13-19 full cross type AF points.

I want 98% Viewfinder coverage if 100% is never going to happen. I need to see more of my framing.

Rumor says HD video is going to be there too. I say fine but give us AF control and AV control and some sort of time sync so we can continue to record sound and stop video to get a picture and later show the video with uninterrupted sound. Video must work smoothly and not be some cobbled add on that is awful to use. 1080P at 60 FPS is where it should go. Use a different file format so we can record more than 12 min at one time too.

GPS is something that MIGHT be useful but not something I would use every day. Figure out a way to add it as an option but don't include it if it comes at a cost to real useful features or cleaner high ISO files.

Put the preset Canon created shooting styles in the menu and assignable to a C-1through C-7 selection on the dial. For those of us who have out grown these Canon chosen presets we can assign what our shooting style needs thus giving us completely custom settings like C-1 and C-2 do now only more of them. Best of both worlds, IMO.

I have also thought and posted elsewhere that I would like to be able to chimp after I snapped a picture at zoomed in 5X or 10X, my choice, to look at my focus point to see that it was in focus. I want to do this WITHOUT having to press any buttons or just one, the review button. It should also allow me to see the histogram too so as to know how it turned out for exposure.

It would work like this... Snap the pic and for 2 -8 seconds or until I press the shutter button or turned off the camera, I would see my focus point at 5X or 10X magnification( my choice) and the single or RGB histogram too. This is how I would like to chimp. I wrote to The Canon tech who writes a monthly column and he said he would pass it on to Canon. This could be offered today in a firmware upgrade. I doubt it will happen but one likes to hope. I even offered to be willing to pay a small fee for this feature.

So to recap...

Full weather sealing
98-100% viewfinder framing.
Better ISO noise at least 1 preferably 2 full stops better.
More AF points 13-19 all cross type
Hd video and real true control with longer shooting time/files. 1080P 60 FPS too.
All selections after Manual,P,AV,TV,A-DEF to be C-1 type programmable so 6 or 7 of these would be great.
Better chimping software in the viewing post snap pop up.

No 50 ISO
No WiFi
No GPS
NO touch screen
No finger print lock
No more creative presets, all C selections user programmable like C1, C2.

I agree with most of your post except for Wifi. It all depends on what you are using the camera for. If you are in a studio you could leave the camera and cf card all day and send the small jpegs to a pc in the studio for the client to view. If you shoot nature this obviously wouldnt be useful.
I have a 50D also, so I probably wont be purchasing a 60D anyway but you never know.

This would be a great feature and even better if added to the 50D through a firmware upgrade.

1). No more live view......

2). true 8 fps

3). Replace the direct print button with: an Acme Mallet that extends to whack the person standing in your way!

4). Better low noise on High ISO better than the 5D mk1.

My wishlist is simple: No Video, please....

TweakMDS

My requests for a future xxD camera are modest...
~15-something megapixels (not more than like 16 anyway)

Some form of live view auto-focusing (contrary to the post above, I love live view, and I use it a lot for precise focus / macro work).

Faster usb transfer / firewire (40D is honestly retardedly slow compared to dedicated CF readers).

Programmable auto iso (in aperture priority while calculating a reasonable shutter speed based on the focal length or a preset of this).

Replacing the direct print button with something people use - like a Save Current Custom Function feature (yay!).

Flash bracketing (seriously, it's too easy to make)

Custom white balance by pointing and half-pressing the shutter at a gray card (or whatever is available) and immediately metering the WB from that.

Focus bracketing: take 3 - 5 shots while slightly adjusting the focus - possibly even focus stacking with more shots.

Jpeg2000 support (ok, I can dream right?)

Full remote control support (just sell an extra RF, IR or even wired remote control with all the dials / options), just let me mount my camera on the tripod and not touch it.

I wouldn't mind video, but it wouldn't be a selling point from me. I'm 99% certain the next xxD body will have video though...

Also, I would love GPS / wifi / bluetooth / wimax / ?, but I would also love being able to turn all of that off to just get the basics...

I don't particularly want ISO 50--most of my shooting is at the top end of the ISO range--but a lower ISO comes in handy when you want a slower shutter speed and don't want to resort to ND filters to reduce the amount of light coming in. One example I can think of is shooting waterfalls and streams.

To be honest, I couldn't give a hippo's butt about more AF points. I'm extremely happy with the existing setup because it takes precisely one maneuver of the joystick to obtain any point. To me, this promotes efficiency and speed. On the other hand, if Canon were to increase the number of AF points, it would take (possible alot) more clicks of the joystick to get 'around the AF grid', so to speak. I was shooting with the D700 the other day, which of course has far more usable AF points. All I was thinking the whole time was 'give me back my 50D' in that respect.

Ideally, I'd like better performance out of each existing AF point.. not more AF points.

1. I will never, ever understand this viewpoint. Why? A truly useful feature than can be fully turned off. What the hell is the problem with that?

2. As compared to all the stuff that can't be captured at 6.3fps....

3. I really can't argue with that one, but at least the button is multi-purpose now.

4. Not happening given the pixel density is almost triple the 5D. Too much focus on high-ISO these days IMO. We're already way in front of film and we survived at those sensitivities for years. Yet somehow, its the new DSLR poster-child.

Right now most people think..."Higher priced camera=better camera". You need to change that thinking over to reality.... "newer model=better camera". Whatever your description of "better" might be.

If you ask me, anyone who compares the xxxD line with the xxD line just isn't out there on a daily basis shooting. I've easily shot 1500-2500 images a week for the past three years with my 30D and if I had a T1i I bet that camera would soon be crushed and defective with this workload and from being in all the crazy places I go. The body is likely nowhere near as tough, dust & weather resistant (even the 30D did pretty well in that department), or as rugged internally as anything in the xxxD line. Period.

There is a lot to this thread that doesn't make sense to me. It makes absolutely no sense at all to compare the 50D to the T1i, except maybe on paper, where numbers, as usual, lie. Price-wise, the 50D has some important, crucial features that literally blow the T1i away. Take just the body, for instance. I'd bet that, to manufacture, the xxD bodies (minus the electronics inside) require 5x the time and cost 10x as much in materials alone to manufacture.

Yes, the xxxD line will, as features come out, "eclipse" the xxD line. But anyone who's out there shooting on a hardcore, daily basis would pick a 40D/50D over a T1i or 500d or whatever ANY day. There's absolutely NO comparison in these cameras.

I want to upgrade my camera. But the simple fact is that, for me, until Canon comes out with a superb low-noise system, I'm not buying jack. 60D, 70D, 80D, your call, Canon. I'll wait. You're not getting another dime from me until you build a camera that'll shoot a smooth, clean image at 1/125 at f/3.5 at a concert, let's say.

Interesting point, and I'd have to agree with much of what you say around here. For me, however, I don't agree on your high-ISO point here. Just because we have eclipsed film (which, on my 30D, I would not agree with, as I get grainy, pixelated pix even at 320/400 ISO) doesn't mean we should be happy with that (though, I do agree people complain very easily when in fact you're right—we are indeed being offered some pretty insane cameras these days!).

Quality systems are expensive and explaining that to the uneducated/incurious public who buy their cameras by "gigahertz" can be frustrating, from a competition point of view. Like everything else, cameras suffer from the "weakest link" rule, too. A camera, no matter how good its electronics are, will produce weak, noisy images if its power supply systems aren't clean to begin with. If the camera's CPU chip designers take shortcuts or introduce inefficient architecture designs full of shortcuts, you get noise. Poor quality power supply and power management can introduce noise into the system. Every system has to be designed with noise in mind. And in the sensor race, quality systems design can be lost.

Canon took a huuuuuge step with the 5Dmkii. But until the next xxD camera offers better ISO performance (and maybe more dynamic range), I'll keep shooting with my 30D and processing my images manually.

I wish Canon and all the rest of the camera manufacturers would wait about the next two years before introducing ANY new models.
In that time people would have to simply use the cameras they own, learn them fully and learn how to be better photographers.

Then, finally when a new model was introduced it would really BE new, instead of just the same model with a few new features that everyone just has to buy, even if the improvements are minimal at best.

Of course this would be bad for the manufacturers bottom lines, so it most likely will never happen, and the feeding frenzy will continue.

How would moving the schedule from 18 months to 24 months improve your photography? You seem to be supposing that as soon as a new version appears, somehow the old camera stops working and one must upgrade to a newer body.

Two things:

1. There has to be something to differentiate, from a marketing perspective, the more expensive cameras from the less.

2. Indoor shooting. There are lots of situations where flash isn't feasible or desirable, so better low-light performance still has plenty of room to grow with respect to shooting people indoors with hand-holdable shutter speeds.

Too much focus on clean high ISO--true. Lots of people who seldom use high ISO talk about it like it's a bare necessity. But it's also silly to say we're way better than film already so what's the big deal. Just because current tech is good doesn't mean better tech isn't desirable. We might as well all break out our Model T cars and vacuum tube radio sets. Maybe a horse and buggy. And toys made out of corn.

Of course this would be bad for the manufacturers bottom lines, so it most likely will never happen, and the feeding frenzy will continue.

These feelings of inadequacy affect us in almost every market from which people purchase. Take the automobile market: every year manufacturers add just enough new features to make the consumer feel that they are missing out, hopefully to the point where they will upgrade. 5 more horsepower won't make any difference in day to day driving, but on paper you don't have the latest and greatest.

What enhances this feeling of inadequacy is the internet and web forums. People LOVE to gloat that they have the latest and greatest, and it causes everyone to examine their current set-up. If you read something enough your mind starts to question what you have, because naturally nobody likes to be second best.

"that 5-hp makes SO much difference"
"I don't know how I lived with 10mp, 15mp is just unbelievable"
"my 2.8Ghz processor makes my 2.68GHz look slooooww in comparison"

As a tech-nerd this is frustrating, but the business side of me knows it's the way to make money because people like us are going to buy-buy-buy! Unless you like to regularly contribute money to a company just to have the latest, fastest, most durable etc., what can you do? Personally, I ignore as much of it as possible and just enjoy what I have. When I get that inadequate, questioning feeling about my 24-70 not having IS, I just go out and shoot some photos and that feeling goes away... or when I start to think my car would be better with 5 more Hp and 30% stiffer suspension, I just go out and drive and realize my car gets me from A to B just as capably as a slightly improved newer model year.

The marketing strategy is effective, but it isn't related to/doesn't affect the skill of the person behind the camera. If you have the money to spend to upgrade every few months, then go right ahead; those who take amazing photos will keep on taking amazing photos regardless, and those that have no clue will remain clueless.

Edit: whenever I realize that what I have is no longer going to be the latest and greatest, I find myself instantly trying to justify why NOT to upgrade b/c I know that deep down I will be considering it even if I have no need to upgrade. The post that I quoted mirrors that exact sentiment; It's a tough internal battle that never ends.

Stuff like that doesn't necessarily degrade functionality or performance, but it does tend to increase the price. The thing is, a camera has a lousy interface for that sort of thing. How many people edit video footage on camcorders?

I have an iPhone myself and love it for the tasks it's suited for -- serious photo manipulation isn't one of them. Transporting baby photos around to show people is, and those are easily managed with the iTunes that one's going to use with the phone anyway.
