Hello, now that I'm set with my XTi, I've been looking into getting a flash. I'd like to do some studio-like still life (in anything but a real studio-ha!) but the lighting in my house can't do the camera justice (especially when it's dark out).

I'd like to spend as little as possible, for now, as I can always upgrade later.

Is a 380EX any good for this type of work? I found one for $60 on craigslist and I'd feel better forking that over than $200+ on something that I'm not sure I'd like to pursue.

Do you have any other suggestions? Any input will be appreciated, thanks!

The 380EX is not a bad flash - but its expandability and usability are a bit low compared to other models. This flash tilts but does not swivel. That is a big limiter when trying to do any creative bouncing of flash. So it will tilt upward...but it does not rotate. It also cannot be used as a slave in a multiple wireless Speedlite setup like its older brother the 420EX can. So it is limited to being a stand alone flash basically.

You may be better off saving a few more pennies and getting a used 420EX, 550EX or maybe looking at the Sigma models.

Thanks for your reply! (Sorry about the delay, had a bit of shopping to do)

I just found a 420EX for $100 so I think that may be the better deal, especially because you suggested it.

I will keep looking but I think the 420EX might just be the better option.

Not a problem - I think that the 420EX for $100 is $40 more dollars well spent over the 380 for sure.

It makes me feel a lot better when someone with more knowledge can push me in the right direction. Thanks so much for your replies. I might just grab that 420EX.
