D30 what flash should I get.

I just got my new to me, otherwise used D30 camera and I love it. I am selling my conventional EOS film camera equipment including my 540EZ. I loved this flash with my 1N and was ready to buy the 550EX but after reading so many complaints from seasoned photographers I am really confused. I use flash for inside shots, sport shots and also use it for fill in. What do you recommend?

I went with the Metz 54. It does ETTL, Auto and manual.

Minimum: 420EX
Maximum: 550EX

The Metz IMHO is for folks that either A: Don't understand E-TTL, B: Don't like the effect of E-TTL, or even C: Do weddings and run into to many instances where E-TTL slows the shutter speed doing it's thing (balancing light to iluminate the background AND forefront of the picture subject, thereby causing excess camera shake and a blurry picture.

Those frustrated by this tend to buy the Metz. I prefer the balanced look of the 550EX personally and DO shoot weddings. I just understand how it works and if necessary adjust exposure and flash levels accordingly. If you want the no brainer approach then the Metz may serve you well.

I agree with traveler. Minimum 420ex and maximum: 550 ex
