Is there any way I can remove fibres, I assume they got there from cleaning, from the inside of my lens.
I have noticeable fibres on the inside of my front and rear elements. I noticed that if you take the lens off and turn the focal ring there is quite a sizeable gap down the sides of the front element, so I'm not surprised they got in there.
Can you take the lens apart to clean the inside? I've noticed a couple of small screws but they look like they just hold the electric contact plate in.

Are you sure what you are seeing are fibers? It could be fungus, which might resemble long fibers and will eat into the lens coating.

I wouldn't even dare open up my lenses.
Take some photos and email Canon or Sigma or Tamron........they might be able to give you a more correct answers.

That makes me feel much better !!!! No they're definitely fibres.
Oh well at least its my cheapest 50mm 1.8, could be worse.

Yeah as he said, some of my rules for pulling things apart, these are from hard earned experience:
1. Don't touch anything with springs!
2. If you don't want more dust in it, don't open it to try and clean it.
Oh and be careful of anything that has those fragile ribbon cables in them, I think lenses fall into all three of the above!

The gap down the side of the 'elements' is not relevant-it doesn't lead anywhere.
The problem with the 50/1.8 II is that it has gaps around it's middle parts inside .It doesn't need them at all so it's a very cheap bad design in that regard.
Mine collected alot of dust just in one day of motocross:(
I fix lenses often so i had a go at cleaning it.
Sadly it's not meant to be worked on at all.The front and rear sections are held together by several glued tabs. All the optical calibrations is also controled by these tabs too it seems, they set it at the factory and that's it!
I've heard of several owners who have accidentally broke this model lens in half (it allways breaks at those inside glued joints i think?) ,reasembled it crudely and it apparently works ok...
I wouldn't try it myself unless it was REALLY messy in there.
By the way-it can't be taken apart without some desoldering work as well.
I've heard that canon just don't service this lens (i.e-it's a throwaway model).I don't know if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me.
As an aside i wonder if,when i buy my next 50/1.8, i should take it apart abit while still new and find some way of covering up those stupid internal gaps?

Cheers for that Ron, just in the nick of time, this Saturday was going to be operation nifty fifty, however after reading that I think I'll just carry on with it until its unusable.
