Is anyone doing anything this weekend? Or has living in Michigan made everyone so broke we can't afford it? I'm going to Greenfield Village today and Kensington metro park tomorrow for some nature pics. Kensington nature center is great for nature shots, birds etc. A few shots at Kensington in my flickr:http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikedee-photos/sets/72157610697499708/

Thanks guys. My last major auto event was that I produced the 1985-86-87 Detroit Gran Prix video for the DGP association. After a Formula One experience, nothing else can come close.

Except working with McKeon and Prudhomme at the Long Beach Cal. Dragstrip in the early 60's, that is.

The Mayfaire Renaissance Festival is running through the end of this weekend. It's in Marshall, Michigan. Ren faires are the best place for people shots. We were there last weekend.

Greenfield Village had a cool civil war reenactment this past weekend too.

Don't forget, Baker's car show is every Sunday... I have to go this year. I hear they get hundreds of cars. From 7Am to 4PM Sunday they will have an F-body show before the regular meet. Expect about 280 Camaro & Firebirds to be there (http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=23021) as well as the GM launch team for the 2010 Camaro.
Bakers is at 2025 S. Milford road, Milford. www.MIFbody.com/meetgreet

Get one of these if you see one at a meet. He lists every weekend & daily meet in the metro area: http://www.cruisnews.com/

There was a nice "street cruiser" meet at the corner of our sub today but I had to stay home and wait for the power company to come out and fix the transformer in our backyard again. This is the second time since Thursday night... Ya, DTE sucks.

^ Drove by there the other day but didn't have my camera. Still plenty of building left for them to demolish - therefore time to get some pics.

Speaking of which - anyone know what's going on at Michigan Central Station? There are work crews there digging up the park in front of the place and there are some large amounts of dirt sitting there now. Are they really carrying out their threat to demo the place?

Sun and Sand... I'll be at Silver Lake Sand Dunes just North of Muskegon all day Saturday shooting the 09 Baja Bash, a large scale radio controlled car shootout of all the manufacturers, people from all over the U.S., Gasoline powered cars 2.5' long and over 20lbs. Something I do every year. I'll have my kites with me so KAP (kite aerial photography) may also be happening as I have some new stuff to test. Just a heads up to let anyone locally know I'll be in the area, if you care to stop in I can tell you how to walk in if you don't have a vehicle setup for the dunes, not a long walk. We'll be there from 9 am until we're fried. ;)

Hey guys. A friend and I wish to get inside Michigan Central Station in Detroit and shoot, today i drove by and noticed the hole that was in the fence is now patched.

does anyone have some tips on entering the building? do the cops patrol the property often? and if they do, do they care about guys with cameras taking a look around?? i mean, i think they have worse things to worry about in detroit.

anyways, i could use some tips on getting access inside the building, besides cutting the fence.. im not sure im willing to get a B&E on my record to take some photos!

thanks alot in advance for any tips!

Good link. I've been told the Daylight will leave Chicago at 8:00 AM on Sunday morning. It will follow the Amtrak route. If you head to Durand I would suggest getting there early. We are going to try getting there around 10:00 AM.

Mike30D

Yeah, it left for Chicago this morning at 8 am central time. It's scheduled to arrive in Durand at 4 pm tomorrow. There were some changes to the route through Chicago as some overhead clearance issues popped up.

For those that aren't going to make it to Trainfestival, the NKP 765 will be back in Michigan in October to run fall color tours with the PM 1225. I believe there's more info on the SRI (Steam Railroading Institute) web site.

EDIT: It will stay in Michigan City overnight and leave from there in the morning to head to Durand.

Funny enough - I had the SAME discussion with my wife. She asked if I was still planning to go to Thunder, and I said I was wavering because I didn't have the "right" equipment to get the shots I know I would want (I saw the show I think 2 years back when the Angels were last there) It's always a good time, but I ended up backing out myself for the same reasons lol

We live right near 59 and Milford Rd.

I'm still debating about Durand, not sure if I want to fight the foamers out there tomorrow. If I go, I won't be out there until around 2 pm.

The Amtrak train stopped in Chicago tonight, SP 4449 apparently went on to Michigan City for the overnight. Tomorrow at 8 am, the Amtrak train will leave and meet up with the 4449 and continue on it's way.

That figures. I was tempted to ask your name too. Well, it was nice to meet you anyway. You should have stayed a few minutes longer and had a burger with us. Most of the good light was gone when the train came in but after waiting that long I wasn't going to leave. I got a few decent shots. I posted them in the Transportation section.

Sorry about your windshield! I know how bad that kind of thing sucks.

i saw them sliding under the fence in the area i marked here

i don't want to get your hopes up too much, but i thought they came from the building, maybe they just cut though the lot..
they probably boarded it up after they found that frozen dead guy in there!

Well getting in the fence wouldn't really be the issue. I think getting INSIDE is the problem.

They boarded it up again when they said they were going to tear down MCS and all the Urban X's were going in there before they knocked it down and figured people would try going in there too. We went a few weeks after that and noticed fresh new boards on the Library.

Lazuka, are you in the Waterford area? Frank has set up several group shoots at Waterford Hills. We've only gone a couple of times but it was great. We got lots of good shots and had a nice time sharing war stories with everyone. We even had a cookout one year and a photo contest sponsored by Jon The Elder. My son won the contest with the "best" picture of Frank.

If anyone can make the trip, SP 4449 has left Owosso and is on it's way to Durand. As far as I know it's still supposed to leave at noon tomorrow.

Jon, you might want to circle Sept. 12th as that is the Hamburg Festival and Railroad Days. I don't know if 765 will come down for it but I know the 1225 will be pulling excursions between AA and Howell.

Hey all - I'm taking a trip for a couple weeks and thinking of maybe putting together a lighter kit.

I'm haven't convinced myself this is a good idea, but is anybody in SE Michigan interested in a temporary lens swap for a couple weeks?

I'm looking to -

loan out my 70-200mm 2.8 IS for someone's 70-200 4 IS.
and
loan out my 85 1.2 L II for someone's 35 1.4 L...

maybe, might loan out my 24-70 2.8 L for someone's 17-40 L, depending on whether or not a I get a 35L loaner (need at least one fast lens)

Anyone have any of the lenses I need and might be interested? Just tossing that out there to see what people think...

I have to arrange a get together shoot - maybe hire a model and do a little shooting - would anyone be interested in doing a portrait type session seminar thing or maybe a photojournalism thing - how to photograph people - approach strangers - photojournalism and then maybe a portrait workshop--- dunno-- maybe in the beginning of Sept?
I could pull a few photojournalist news editors together - do some class work - then lunch and then hands on work - maybe 9am to 3pmish on Sat in Sept?
How about Troy? Farm Hills? Thoughts?

Actually, in one of the groups posts *somewhere* (fickr, facebook, or something) they said he had provided anything they asked for and was footing the expenses. In fact, they also said that his wife was out there helping plant flowers. Of course, it should never have come to this, but that's a whole 'nother argument.

The Moroun's are always being ragged on and made out to be the bad guy's because they have money, and they didn't get that money by screwing over us poor folk but by working their a$$ off and building their wealth the old fashon way. thats what i was afraid of.. that was a tight squeeze even before...

i know some people schooch under the fence along 15th Ave.. there is a substantial gap and after that you can enter the building for many places.

but there is another way though the garage.. once inside the garage there are lots of large openings see photo

then you can proceed into the building from various windows on the west side

We sat in line for 1 hour 50 minutes. I think my blood pressure is still high too. I idled away several gallons of diesel. And honestly, it really wasn't worth the hassle. So my first thought is we won't be going back again. After all these years you'd think the local police departments would have a better solution worked out for traffic control. It was pretty poor planning. I think my son got better pictures of the cops standing around. Especially the Chesterfield Police. One guy talked on his cell phone, did some texting and messed around on a laptop setup on his trunk for a long long time. I think he looked up at the traffic two or three times at the most.

I was there sunday as well. I was looking at everyone with a Canon camera, wondering if it was one of you fine folks.
I got some semi decent shots, but left at around 12:00 when I saw that there wasn't going to be much going on for a few hours. It took almost an hour to get out of the parking lot.

We were directed to go left when we got out of Selfridge, and that took us all the way around the blasted property. By the time we got back to the front, we saw that they changed the traffic pattern and that people who had been a half hour behind us were now way ahead since they were able to make a right turn out of Selfridge.

It was fun though.

Coming in off North River Rd when you get in line you park on the side of the road and wait for the gates to open.It did rain for about half an hour and we sat in the car until it stopped . I was still able to get in the first row along the fence in a good spot for picture taking. As I said before I wasn't happy about it taking over an hour to get out of the parking lot.
