So if you had Friday 09/04 off from work, what/where would you go shoot around S.E Michigan? Especially around sunrise.
I'd say you should find a nice remote lake. Get on the west shore and wait for the sun to come up. With the low temperatures we've been having in the evenings you should have a nice layer of fog to get some shots of...

I'd love to go, but currently money is tight. I live about 1.5 hours from Sleeping Bear, we usually make a trip once a year with the family. Just waiting for the fall colors, usually the 2nd or 3rd week in October, but it may be early this year.
There is a paved scenic trail that takes you to many places though the dunes. (drive a vehicle or ride a bicycle (you can smoke mountian bike brakes)).
There are other trails that also lead to the beach South of the hill climb, there is a popular small inland pond fed by Lake Michigan, shallow water keeps it warm.
I believe its the doplar radar sphere is located there too.
When we do head up, I'll have my KAP gear (kite) and hopefully a plane ready too.

I got some semi decent shots, but left at around 12:00 when I saw that there wasn't going to be much going on for a few hours. It took almost an hour to get out of the parking lot.
We were directed to go left when we got out of Selfridge, and that took us all the way around the blasted property. I got to the lot just a few minutes after the end & it took only 15 minutes to get out. I also made the mistake of being in the right lane which took me all the way to the N end of the base. We'll know better next time.
Just to test the waters without sending out PMs to everyone, who would for sure go to Waterford Hills for sports car club racing on October 4th?
I don't see any point in arranging a shoot with the club for 2-3 people.

Even though it's a month off and it's really not an "event" so to speak. Railroads Illustrated magazine has picked October 3rd as this year's "Day in North America". They want submissons of what is happening on that day on north american railroads. They will be dedicating a future issue to this, so get out and shoot; you just might get published.

Yeah, I didn't get to go down and take the kids like I wanted to - had to get the pool closed down for the winter. Don't forget, Oct. 3rd (also "Day in North America" - heading to Ohio for that one) is the doubleheader trip from Cadillac to Alma. It will be the last chance to shoot the NKP 765 before it heads back to Indiana.

Great, thanks. 2006 the Polar Express went by and I didn't have any photography gear, it set fires every few hundred yards and the DNR postponed its return for a day so it could be followed back.
2007 I got this photo from my RC Heli Southeast of Marion, disappointed it wasn't a steam train because I'd planned it for a year.

2008, this was from my mast at the old train station in Cadillac.

It'll be great to have a Steam train go through again. It's been a few years.
If it's not windy I'll either use the mast or RC Plane, if it's windy I'll use the kite.

Thanks for the heads up on this Mike.
It did stop here to pick up a few passengers, which gave two photo ops per direction as I raced ahead.
It was a poor day for photography, dark and raining almost the entire day. I've been denied again getting aerial photos, so I just did what I could. A video camera was under the lifted tailgate of my mini van when it wasn't in the open covered with a hat. The Canon A640 had a rain shield over it and placed next to the tracks using the CHDK interval shutter hack, and I was shooting hand held with the XT and L lens.
With such dull colors, rain, and the fall colors just barely starting I processed with pseudo HDR using Dynamic Photo HDR (pseudo = single image fake hdr).
Here are a few of my favorites.

and a surprise from the A640 shooting auto. I have to do some repair to the photo, but think it turned out pretty cool anyway.

They're processed to look kind of like a painting.

Sure, the only one I really know of that really wants submissions is McMillan Publications. There's a few more out there, but they seem to be locked up tight on submissions unless you have a "new" idea for a calendar.

Sunday Oct. 18th we went to Sleeping Bear Dunes at Empire. The day started out nice, then got cold and dark. Colors from Frankfort - Empire - Traverse City were spotty with brown tones, then bright colors. Just find the colors you want and find something to shoot. This weekend they should be peak, if the wind hasn't blown them all off yet.

Those out there that were planning on shooting the PM 1225, if you weren't out there this past weekend... well, she's done for quite awhile....
Per MSTRP:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PERE MARQUETTE 1225 Sidelined
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Steam Railroading Institute, in its sixth season of the North Pole Express, hosted over 2,500 passengers this past weekend during its annual winter train excursions. Children and adults, from as far away as California, enjoyed a magical four hour experience which included a trip to the North Pole. Passengers enjoyed complimentary hot cocoa, visits with Santa, holiday rides, model railroad displays, live entertainment, holiday crafts, Kris Kringle Mart and hours of family fun. "We are very fortunate to be able to host thousands of new and returning visitors annually,"commented TJ Gaffney, Executive Director.
While Pere Marquette 1225 was under steam and the star of the show for the first trip on opening day, during a routine inspection of the locomotive at the North Pole a mechanical issue was found. The crew decided that in the interest of preserving the locomotive and keeping the North Pole Express trains operating, as planned, it was best to remove 1225 from service. "We would love to continue to run the locomotive," said Greg Udolph, Chief Mechanical Officer of the Steam Railroading Institute, "but the truth remains, the 1225 is a 70-year old piece of machinery that was built on an assembly line the same way an automobile is built. During its career the engine has racked up well over a million miles. The boiler on 1225 has shown the crew that it is ready for some serious work. Next year starts a major rebuild of the locomotive to try to put some of the miles back into her. With the current mechanical issue at hand it is best for the locomotive and the schedule of the North Pole Express trains to bring the engine down and prepare for her rebuild.
This past July, during TrainFestival 2009, the engine had a couple of tubes that cracked and released some steam. In the weeks to follow, the crew fixed the problem by replacing the tubes. The engine then successfully ran a two-day photo charter, hourly excursions during Hamburg Railroad Days and an all-day excursion to Cadillac, Michigan, in conjunction with the Ft. Wayne Railroad Historical Society's Nickel Plate Road 765. Unfortunately, this repair was not enough. It is time to fully inspect the boiler and figure the cause of these problems. This process will be costly, intense and take a minimum of one year.
In order to continue to give the passengers the experience they deserve we have decided to bring 1225 out of her storage building and put her on display for all to see. She will be fully visible and located next to the Christmas trains. Volunteers from SRI will be on hand to answer questions, show off different parts of the locomotive and provide cab tours. Passengers will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the engine. Kids will have the rare and unique opportunity to sit in the engineer's seat and ring the bell on the locomotive.
SRI would like to thank the many passengers that have been very compassionate of the fact that SRI had to substitute the motive power. The North Pole Express will still be operating and offering a quality memorable experience for each of its passengers with the assistance of a Great Lakes Central Railroad diesel locomotive.
The Steam Railroading Institute strives to provide a memorable experience for each and every passenger and will continue to preserve the knowledge, skills and technology involved with the maintenance and operation of steam locomotives and to educate the public about the enormous impact that these machines had in the economic development of Owosso and the Great Lakes Region.

I will be there... Sno Drift is usually a toss up... I have been to Mud Drift, Ice Drift (the usual) and every once and a while, snow drift. In other words the weather is the one thing that is hard to plan for, so be ready for anything.
I could give you some tips on getting around. RA does a great job of setting up spectator areas, but that's only if you like to take the same shots as everyone else.
Hope you can make it!

My main concern is getting there as it will probably be a 6 hour drive for me...if the weather cooperates.
Do you know if they will have different "stages" set up or is it just one point a-to-b course? As I understand it there will be one super special course somewhere between (or around) Lewiston Sand and Gravel and Kneeland St. where all events will take place. It looks like they will start at 2:31pm on Friday (29th) and continue 8:30 Saturday morning. At least that's what I am gathering between the Sno*Drift and the Rally America website. Any tips would be great.

I hold a membership pass which will admit myself and any two others,

Lots of cool stuff to see and photograph there.
If you'd like to meet, please PM me for details.
My membership expires mid-February, but allowing for a good tax refund,
I'll renew it for another year.
Please PM for details.

If we don't go both days (which might be easyer/ cost less) id like to be able to see Mirra, Pastrana, and Block go by and take their photos..haha. So if anyone knows when they will be racing, chim in!

Yep, it's a flatbed with a crane. The kind that deliver construction materials to rooftop jobs. South bound Woodward at Lone Pine or Long Lake (the same corner that the old Fox & Hound was at).
Ya just had to say something about the 09 pass! Honestly, we replaced it with the 2010 pass that same evening. The state sticker on the other side of the windshield is still a 09 though... ;)
