I have been seriously discussing with a few freinds to give it a try. Have you been inside?
Me and a couple friends went there last month. We didn't stay long because construction crews came in a little after we did so we had to sneak out. But now would best if you dont mind freezing.
Chris thsoe are nice shots. Here is one of downtown fraser.

Hey guys, if you have time and want to drive the west side of Northern Michigan, it is starting to look a lot like Christmas around here!!! We have a lot of snow and in many places it is sticking well to the trees. Mornings will find a lot of frost on the bare limbs as well. Roads are fairly clear now as well.

Hi Erik,
Not sure I can get there for the Ice festival but we are looking very closely at doing a trip around the weekend of the 20th of February to shoot waterfalls in the snow. I am not much for the climbing stuff but that festival would be fun. Last year we went out to L&D 14 and shot eagles and really want to do that again as well but there are only so many weekends available. Are you going to shoot some waterfalls on other weekends? Just curious. Rick

Rick, your shots are great from that weekend. Where/ What is L&D 14 if you don't mind me asking. I would love to find a concentration of eagles somewhere. I don't think I would know what to do with myself. I am definitely planning a trip up to the Munising area sometime this winter, I have just been so swamped lately. I think I will get out there some time in Feb.
Coming up next weekend is Sno*Drift. There doesn't seem to be a ton of Michigan motorsport fans here, but for some it might be worth checking out. It is one of my favorite events of the year. http://sno-drift.org/

I know the boat tour is a bit cliche but they do have an evening tour and that one will give you some very unique shots with some awsome light if the day is clear. If you want to see more from land, it is hiking time.

I shoot it where ever I can!!:) I am interested in Shiawasee. Is there a specic place that is best? Is the water always open or are you there more spring and fall? Just curious. Around me there is thousands of acres of federal and state forest. I spend a lot of time in a pickup, working my way around and seeing what I can find to shoot. When I find an area that consistently shows certain wildlife, I will pick some time to do a stake out so to speak. I think I have an owl some what pinned but need to relocate him this spring. I will stake that one out. Driving back roads and studying topo maps, I find a lot of ponds and marshes that are quite remote and during the spring until early fall, I am totally alone out there. We do go to Seney national wildlife refuge in Seney Michigan when we can Last year we made it up there two times. GREAT place to see many birds and other marsh animals. I want to try and hit Whitefish point this year in early spring during some of the migrations. They get a lot of birds flying north and they tend to cross the whitefish point area before they fly across lake Superior. There is also a refuge over by Tawas city that I have heard is really good in the spring. I want to get there some time as well. Not always eagles but I enjoy being outdoors.
Have you ever seen the wildlife viewing page on the Michigan DNR website?
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12144---,00.html
It has a lot of ideas to consider. I have spent some times on a side page from that one called Michigan Wildlife Viewing Guide. Once you bring up that page, you will find a link to now available online. Hit that. Now click on the region of the state you want to research and it will give you a list of all wildlife areas. Great tool if you want find areas with reasonable access. Feel free to have a look. Besides, our tax dollars paid to have it put up.

Even the scrappers have yet to cover every inch of the place, as we know. :p
Really like your shot of Fisher Body.
Does anyone else remember the oval Fisher Body logo sill plates in car doors?
I grew up with a family two houses away by the name of Fisher, and Jack's dad
had an enormous Fisher Body logo on the wall of his garage, even though he
was never part of the Fisher Body Works. It was around three feet wide,
molded plastic or resin, and painted to match the original Fisher Body logo.
My family had the matching sill plates in our cars during my childhood.
Sadly, my buddy Jack was taken prematurely at age 32 by a massive and
unexpected coronary infarction. I still miss him, more than 15 years later.
The whole friggin' city is covered with graffiti.Yeah, just about.
The problem is the residents: They mostly live under the radar, and will threaten you
if you stomp on their turf. Not a nice scenario unless you know the turf and/or
are prepared to take a security posse with you.
Detroit officials are also sounding the alarm that the official population has gone
below 750k, which will result in decreased federal funding. If they can't find a way
to officially report a population above 750k, and soon, they'll be at high risk of
losing various federal funds to sustain the city's workings as a major metropolitan
city of America. This represents roughly a one-million decline in the population
over the past ten years or so, and the numbers continue to dwindle as the city
becomes more inhospitable to visitors.
It's a huge shame to me, simply because Detroit has such a large number of
buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but they sit to rot.
We have some extremely important architectural examples in Detroit, but
there seems to be no genuine interest in keeping these important structures
preserved.

There is a bike/walking trail in downtown Detroit called the dequinder cut. Its an old train line that has been cleaned up and cleared out. It has all the origional grafiti preserved. It also has plenty of lights and emergency cameras and phones every quarter mile. Ive shot many seniors and engagement shoots there. Its beautiful, look it up

Very nice--it's only a stones throw away, so I think I'll go on Saturday. Do you happen to know how many cars tend to show up? It couldn't possibly be anywhere near as big as the annual Woodward Dream Cruise, right?

I'd expect at least 200, but they've got room for a lot more. Their evening shows always have 150-250 mostly excellent quality cars & I expect that these will all be prime+ too.

A recent report from the FBI did not show Southeast Michigan in a positive light.
According to 2010 crime statistics, Flint and Detroit rank first and second, respectively, in the country for violent crimes.

Actually, the crime numbers for Detroit have been going down, mostly due to the fact
that Detroit's population has been diminishing, which makes Detroit's figures
something less significant than they once were.
Flint is another story entirely:
Much like Gary, Indiana, Flint is quickly being abandoned.
Detroit is too large for such a large-scale abandonment,
but is on the same path of such widespread apathy.
The population of Detroit has diminished by something like a million people
over the past decade, which actually puts the city in jeopardy of losing
all sorts of federal funding if they can't prove there's more than a million
residents. As it stands now, reports are that there's less than 750k people
living within the boundaries of Detroit, which makes for very short funding from
the federal level for the city. Combine this with Kilpatrick's rape of the city's
coffers, and you've got a major city in dire straits.
The short of it is that there's an awful lot of apathy that would re-elect
someone like Kwame Kilpatrick in a heartbeat, but they won't take
any initiative for making Detroit a better place.
While the residents will often and easily complain about problems,
most of them take zero initiative in making changes.
Detroit is largely doomed to die, due to the complete apathy
exhibited by her current residents, and their reluctance to make
any sort of issue about current conditions.

Detroit is a pit and has been since the early 60's. My family owned several restaurants and a truck stop chain in Detroit. Most locations were robbed daily and the city did nothing to help. We eventually closed all of our businesses in Detroit and never looked back. It's still a pit and deserves it's miserable ending. The people of Detroit are what makes it what it is.

West Michigan, Kalamazoo specifically. And as for dates available, that would need to be scheduled, as it is a one on one training. I would be able to travel, though studio work would not apply as I do not have a studio contact on that side of the state. All lighting and lighting modifiers are provided for the class, just need to bring a camera, yourself, and perhaps a notepad or something to take notes.

I'm looking for some ideas/places in or around Traverse City. I'm going to be there the first week of November with nothing but free time during the day. My wife is going for a conference and I'm tired of staying home with the kids when she does these things, so I decided to find family to watch the kids and I'd take a cheap vacation with her. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

One idea would be to try a drive up Old Mission Peninsula. Drive Up M-37. There are lots of great views along the road. Stop at the Mission Point Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. The lighthouse is nice with lots of photo ops there. Then drive back down Peninsula Drive. And to sweeten the deal, there a some great vineyards along the way to stop at, drink some wine and take some photos.
Taking a trip to Sleeping Bear dunes is another option, though it's 45min-1hour away. Try the tails at Sleeping Bearing Point, the Empire Bluff trail, or stopping at Esch Road beach or Platte River Point beach for some nice photo ops.
