View Full Version : Talk about what to shoot in Michigan

There's been a lot of talking about what to shoot in Michigan in the How many from Michigan? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=118688) thread & it's become way OT. So I'm moving some of the posts here to clean that thread up a bit & in the hopes that you guys can eventually come up with something to actually go out & do. ;)
Go ahead & organize among yourselves here.
If you want to organize something statewide, start a thread with a descriptive title, with the details. Add a link to it in How many from Michigan?, as a heads up. PM me & I'll give you a list of all the MI members & you can PM them & notify them of the thread.
How hard can it be? ;)

I understand that, I was just going about reading the rest of the thread. Seemed funny that it was like that with my other Michigan car club. I'd love to get together and shoot as of right now my D40 with kit lenses and the time of year (gets dark early) they aren't good since I have the worst aperture ever. Anyway, I need to take pictures of something today I think.

I was thinking yesterday that i might take a ride up around St. Clair to take some landscape shots or old barn pics in the fresh snow.
Do you know any areas where there are some cool looking old barns?

There are cool barns all over the place. Any road you go down there is cool shots. Already have a few. Check em out. I was thinking of going out today also and getting some pictures. I'm doing some black and whites for a picture collection we have on the wall downstairs.
This first picture needs a crop, I'm aware ;)

I took a couple of pics of a Bald Eagle late this summer at Cross Winds Marsh. Kinda on the other side of Detroit for you but still managable. Seems they have quite a bit of fowl, the eagle pic is one of a pair near their nest (on the east side of the marsh).
http://www.waynecounty.com/parks/cwinds_park.htm
There is a full list of birds spotted in the park on the website.
Pics taken with my 40D and 70-200 2.8IS. I am itching for a longer lens for these types of ocassions.

Links to other tests in there & Post #8 shows f/8 effective. I suggest that you go up to f/11 if you can.

34 pages is a lot to sift through...I'm in East Lansing currently and could really use a group to go out shooting with! I've done about as much up here as I'd care to do by myself (safety, etc) because I'm a big fan of shooting industrial/cityscape and Lansing isn't the safest place to walk around by yourself with expensive electronics ;)
If anyone wanted to meet up and go exploring I'm all about it. Weekends are best (I work in Howell so it's a 2hr/day commute for me). :)

I've heard the bulk of the exotic makers will be absent, including Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, and Bentley. Aside from that though, Nissan, Infiniti, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi announced their withdrawl too. But, the local Nissan, Infiniti, and Mitsubishi dealers announced that they will foot the bill for bringing the cars to the show. However, that pretty much means that the cars will be there and that's about it since the dealers are footing the bill.
All in all, sounds like a tremendous disappointment to me, and I'm a total car freak. If I want to see mainstream rides, I'll just go to a dealership.

I really want to make a trip to the Meijer Gardens, but winter might not be the right time... www.meijergardens.org/
I guess what we need to figure out is what people enjoy shooting? Personally I go for Floral (seasonal obviously) and Cityscape/Landscape, however I shoot just about anything for fun. ;) Cityscape around Lansing is pretty easy (though the locations need to be planned out...and outdoors in the winter is rough), but other than that Lansing is pretty quiet. MSU's campus is a great place to shoot, but unless you catch it during (or immediately following) a massive snow fall the winters can be an ugly mess up here. I've tried shooting twice this year and once the snow is plowed it's kind of downhill...unless you get lucky and get massive snowfall back to back with rays of sunshine! That's fantastic, but of course we can't plan for it...
So our options seem to be brave the cold or setup some kind of studio practice somewhere. Get some subjects (animate or other) and learn/teach some studio techniques. :) We could also setup/build lightboxes of various sizes and teach/learn others how to create, light and use lightboxes.
Just some ideas.

EDIT: For anyone else that's confused, this was supposed to be the first post in the thread but Vb wouldn't let me put it there. (Don't ask!).
How hard can it be? ;)

Can do, I've owned (and still do) a number of vB sites so I can handle it. First we need to figure out what to do though! :D

While I don't live in MI anymore - I DO have fond memories of the Plymouth Ice fest - mentioned a few posts ago.
Also the Ann Arbor area is a GREAT place to take photos. The Arboretum (if its still there), the diag, most of the university area has a really nice atmosphere. Ypsi has a slew of parks and old buildings (depot town - the downtown area - old abandoned factories) - Do they still do the Willow Run Air Show?

I've never taken a workshop there but my kids have. It's a decent place to get a few quick shots though.

Let me know if any of you get together along Lake Michigan shoreline. I live just north of G.R. I usually spend a week at Ludington State Park in late July. Great places in that park for some photo opps.
BTW, the visitor center in the State Park sponsors a photo contest every year. Reed Photography in Ludington judges the photos and awards a small prize for the winners. I also got a request for the DNR to use my photo for a postcard out of it.

I couldn't get the white balance right. Kept going back and forth between florescent and incadescent but both kept giving me blue pics. When I got home I played with the WB slider in ACR and then it hit me, they use daylight bulbs to give the car paint more true colors. Glad I shoot in RAW.

For anyone out to NAIAS, if you're in the mood for a trip to Belle Isle, 90% through the trip around the island, there's a giant ice tree. Water spraying from the top created this HUGE ice formation, pretty interesting subject to shoot. You can see it from the bridge off to the left, and have to drive right past it after you make it almost all the way around the island.

So I went to Kennsington Metro Park in Michigan USA after work yesterday with the intent of taking some of those cool pictures where my kid has a hand of bird seed and the birds fly down and eat out of your hand.
I have walked around the park many times and seen people doing this and hundreds of birds.
My question is is there a preferred time to do this as we went just before sun set around 5;30pm and we did not even see or hear a bird in over 30 minutes. ??

I was at Kensington about 3 weeks ago at 5pm and didn't see any birds either. I also went in the fall a couple of times at around 9:30am and also 4pm, and they were there, but there was also plenty of light, which may be a factor.

Jumping in late here... I was in Michigan for 3 years.... a few favorites are no longer there. Just east of St Joe, there was an abandonded slauter house, 40's era building, and falling apart. I have spent a whole day there. Another favorite was at Silver Beach in St. Joe, The inlet light house would get covered in ice every winter, made for a great subject.

Mackinaw Island has a lot to offer. There's lighthouses, ship traffic, old forts, nice houses, lots of gardens, great water color, etc,..
At Oakland University (Rochester), you can go to the roof of the engineering building for a good view. It's best if you want a different perspective of Chrysler's headquarters.
