Recently bought D90 and while taking a photo, strong wind knocked over the camera on tripod. According to the shop, I need to replace the front cover plastic, AF/MF trigger module, and metal holder for neck strap. Replacing the front plastic doesn't seem hard, but AF/MF module and metal holder seems hard. Especially with metal holder, I need to take apart the whole body.

Shop quoted me $329 on just the labor and $59 on parts. If it's not too hard, I would like to do it by myself. I spent good amount of time with camera and there's nothing wrong with anything else. It's just the cosmetic damage + af/mf..

That bent strap eye is potentially a sign of severe internal frame damage. I wouldn't think they'd anchor that solely to the molded bits. Tough one...

If the noink folks fix it...I suspect they will offer a warranty of some sorts on the repair, if you fix it...you get what you get. I'm thinking it would probably be worth the bucks to let the pros handle this one..

if I do send it into nikon, would it be around the same cost to fix?

I just want to be prepared before I send it in....

Your best bet is to contact them and get a quote. I suspect they handle their repairs much like Canon does...you send the camera in, they do an evaluation and give you an estimated repair cost. I would expect that the costs would be in line with or slightly less than what you have been quoted. The biggest thing will be having the work warrantied.

Ouch. I've never worked on a Nikon dSLR and am not familiar with the internals of the D90 but my first instinct is that I wouldn't be tempted to try this one.

Impact damage can be tricky and a solid repair warranty would be nice on a camera worth as much as this.

Don't want to be alarmist, but if it was mine I would get a couple of quotes and have it fixed sooner rather than later. The camera may not exhibit other symptoms right now but there may be internal damage or problems waiting to manifest themselves.

Good luck- I hope it turns out well, however you choose to handle it.

Sounds like a sign from god, and thus he {or she} spake, "go Canon you sinner"

I knew it!

Plus I could be speaking about any god, it is a very general term (why does everybody assume I'm talking about the Christian God?).

I was talking about the camera god....Effstopsus (he's Ra's 2nd cousin (twice removed)). :p

^^ If god was on my side, he would send me 5D mark II instead of repaired D90 from Nikon :)

Effstopsus demands NIKON BLOOD, you can not appease Effstopsus by merely denting your Nikon! :p

If you're going to work on your Nikon yourself, you need to pick up some specialized tools....
