Does anyone know of who it would be best to contact Canon about donating some gear to my schools newspaper?

Where are you located? I want to work for the school if they start handing out 'L' Glass:D

Go to a local camera shop and ask who is the area Canon rep. They would be the best person to point you in the right direction.

Might want to talk with the local camera shop and see if they would be willing to donate some stuff if you made sure to let all the kids know they got a discount on supplies who showed a school ID.

When I went to school for photography, if we showed our school ID, we got a 20% discount if we used a local camera shop that also gave the teacher some of the supplies we used.

Just an idea - Good Luck

They said send it to me! I teach high school digital photography and I'm the yearbook advisor.

I'll even pay the shipping.

Unlike many people on the internet when I talk out of my a&& I try to remember to mention that fact.

So right now I'm talking out of my a&&.

I really can't see Canon providing gear for free... the demand for such is mind-crushing. I live in a (relatively) small town and we have four high schools! Can you imagine how many high schools there are just in your state? The country?

So frankly... personally... I wouldn't even bother. But there are some alternatives.

Now I am NOT talking out of my a&&.

I just hit Craigslist and found a Canon D30 (body only) w/battery, charger, and CF card for $125. I kid you not. My teeth hurt because I don't have the cash right now.

I also found a Canon T50 (film) with two lenses for $85.

You can find Canon EOS Elan 7 SLRs... which are VERY good modern cameras... for under a hundred dollars day in and day out on eBay. Combine them with a film scanner (Plustek?) and you have digital prints that have a higher resolution than a Canon D1s MkIII for under $500!!!!!

Lots of affordable possibilities out there. Keep in mind that digital bodies just keep getting cheaper and cheaper but glass is relatively consistent. Lots of people sell their glass when they sell the body. That T50 I mentioned included a Speedlight, a FD 50mm 1.8, a 80-200 f/4.5 macro, a 2X teleconverter, filters, cases, manuals... the whole kit and kaboodle. I am SERIOUSLY considering that T50 just for the 80-200mm and the teleconverter!

You have to do it the way others do it... find a RFP (Request For Proposal) for a grant that meets your situation. Write the proposal and hope to win. Because of the number of schools that are in a similar situation as you, the grant route is the way you must take. Competition will be fierce so don't count on it as the sole way of funding your program.

After looking through some results from a Google search (http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS305US305&aq=f&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=rfp+grant) for how to write and find grants I think the OP should give SERIOUS consideration to conducting bake sales and car washes!!!

If you can contact the Canon rep, you might be able tot get a deal on some used equipment(stuff the reps use for demonstration). You will also need the schools tax id to get it Tax free.....

My high school (marching band) made ALOT of money through car washes (in Arizona).
