Okay I know this is a really dumb question
I have a Bogen/Manfrotto 3047 Pan/Tilt Head with Quick Release on my tripod. Works fine unless I want to use my 100-400 lens, which has the tripod ring on it.... so I either have that little screw in plate attached to the camera body, or I have to take it off the camera and attach it to the 100-400 lens itself.

What am I missing here? Sorry for the dumb question, I've not really used a tripod much... but is there a simpler way to swap between them?

Thanks :o

Fundamentally, there are two parts to a quick release system. There is the part that is on the tripod head, and then there is the part that is on the camera or lens.

You'll likely have only one tripod head with quick release part there.

You may have multiple cameras or lenses that need to be used, so you have multiple quick release parts attached more or less permanently on each one.

I have one on each camera body and one on my long wildlife lens.

You need to buy more of these. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=5295&is=REG&addedTroughValue=5296_REG&addedTroughType=accessory) (I think that's the correct plate for your tripod head.

Well DOH! LOL It's so obvious now  Thank you very much guys!

I have another silly question. I would like to get a monopod for the 100-400, because it's just too heavy for me to handhold, though hubby has no problem. I think the Gitzo G-1568 Mountaineer Mk2 Reporter Carbon Fiber Monopod is the one I want, it supports up to 8.75 lbs, is that adequate for the Canon 10D plus the 100-400L?

Also, do these monopods (or this one in particular) use a head, or do you just screw the camera/lens directly to the monopod? I can't tell from the Bogen website?

Thank you kindly... some day I may take an adequate picture, I have all the toys and no excuses, but it sure is fun!

That monopod will support the 10D/100-400 ... no problem.

Using a head on a monopod is not necessary ... but I use this one (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5491&is=REG) on mine. It allows quick and easy switching to portrait orientation, and it provides a quick release system. Unfortunately, the quick release system on these heads do not match the system on your tripod head.

I just oredered the Velbon CF monopod for $129 from B & H Photo. Like you, I wanted the Gitzo, but figure this will be very close for $80 less.

Hmmm... well part of what really attracts me to the Gitzo is that it only weighs 1lb. I discovered in no time at all that I couldn't lug my Bogen / Manfrotto 3221WN around with me at over 6 lbs, but I really love it as long as I don't have to hike with it!

I look at heads for the Gitzo then, probably order it without first, then figure out which one I need, if any.

I have a 3.5 pound tripod that I use for my 100-400 lens. When you get to lenses that size, it is the lens that goes on the tripod or monopod head, not the camera body. Fortunately, the tripod is light enough that I can carry it around (either over my shoulder, in my hand, or on my backpack) for long distances, and I can use it like a monopod in a hurry.

CJ,. you may want to look at getting a QR adapter for your new monopod as well,. and it should be the same as the QR assembly on your tripod,. so you can go back and forth without hassle.

You can get THIS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=269979&is=REG) to make it so you never have to screw things on and off ;)
