Which Canon 35mm SLR is good for starting off with? I want full control but not something over welming. I was looking at Nikon's N80, but I don't know what is comparable to that with Canon. I want to move to a Canon DSLR eventually I believe. I need some ideas of where to start!

I will be starting Photography classes this fall.

I don't know much about film cameras, but check out the member selling the Elan 7. That's a very nice camera or so I've heard... ;)

Do you have lens already? If no then I woud go with a Canon Elan 7, they take awesome pictures, have tons of manual settings and will run you now about $200 US used off ebay. I have one, and never regretted that purchase.

I'd stick to one brand so when you buy a Digital SLR you can use the same lens. Canon I know does that, the others not sure about.

One thing you might do is to contact the instructor of the class and ask. Often, they dictate to the students what kind of camera, film SLR, digital, or whatever, they need to use for the class.

Then, whichever way you go, film or digital, get something so that you can move lenses back and forth interchangeably. Nikon to Canon does not work. Canon EOS film to Canon EOS digital will work.

The class I will be starting in (which is prerequisite to Digital) is 35mm film. I have no lenses as of yet. I am trying to get an idea right now of what options are there for me.

i have a canon rebel G which i started out with in high school about 6 years ago. i used it in my beginning photography classes in college and now i'm shooting digital with a canon 20D. both lenses i had for my 35mm rebel work pretty well on my 20D so if you plan to stick with canons, the interchangable lenses are always a plus. also a lot of the dials and functions are the same so it will make the transition from film to digital that much smoother.

Go for the Canon Elan 7 EOS then. It basically does all the same things as a EOS 1 or 3 but is a lot less in price. Its original price (at least here) was $800 when it first came out. But is a deal at around $200 for the body and a little more with lens. You don't want to spend too much on a film camera since odds are you'll use your Digital SLR more once you get it and this one will just collect dust.

Here is a search to give you an idea what they go for or include, CANON ELAN 7 (http://search.ebay.com/Canon-Elan-7_Film-Cameras_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR8QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQs acatZ15230)

When my wife took a Photo 1 class, I bought a new Canon Rebel GII kit from Amazon for about $200. It did everything she needed and she was quite comfortable with it. After the class, I was able to resell it on eBay for a net loss of about $40...so it was like renting a new camera for $40. I sold it because she wants a digital SLR now. Like you, she doesn't want anything overwhelming, so I will probably look for the older digital Rebel (which I expect to drop in price since the dRebel XT is here.)

Dunno what it's called in the states I believe it's called Elan II . Its called EOS 5 in UK. I would recommend that. It's got all of the features you would ever need and a few more you don't normally use. For a film camera it's a bit of a kit. Now its very cheap to buy as well. oh and you can use the Eye focusing feature on it (as seen on Eos 3)

Any of the rebel cameras (I like the Rebel T2, personally, out of all of them) or an Elan 7/n/ne would suit you well.

Or if you want to go "hardcore" grab something like an AE-1 from years gone by :)
