While visiting Hong Kong I had a mini trip to HCM and Siem Reap, Cambodia. HCM wasn't nearly as exciting for me to visit as Cambodia was. Things I liked about Vietnam: The food I ate, people watching, going outside the city for part of the day, the Vietnamese perspective on the war, shooting an m-60 machine gun. Things I disliked: The constant stares walking around, little to no traffic regulation, their currency, smoking allowed everywhere, not much to explore within the city (that I could figure out anyway).

With all those stares, I'll bet you were holding on to your equipment with a tight grip. I like the trees. Did you go down in the tunnels?

#1 makes me wonder if all of those people are waiting at a red light. #5 - What a mess of power lines. How can they tell where anything is???

Great shots. I was there just a few months back. Brought all my gear along but came down with severe food poisoning. After recovering I didn't have the energy to bring out my camera at all, lol.

Number 5 is pretty crazy...I mean, imagine someone having to deal with that stress?

I like 6 and 7, too...smoke is always fascinating.

Can't wait to visit Vietnam and take some pictures of the people and the region. I am just afraid of getting mugged and losing my photog gears. :)

You made me homesick again, Tom. The rubber forest is my favorite, great light and composition.

I brought my tripod to hong kong, didn't use it at all really aside from some cityscape shots. Bought a Gorillapod to use just in case for Vietnam/Cambodia.

Tom, I'm going over to Vietnam in April, how safe did you feel taking your kit with you?

What gear did you take and was there anything that you regretted not taking?

Fairly safe, sometimes I'd just walk around with my 5D and 50mm 1.4 and other times would have my bag with 16-35, 70-200 in it. Still I wouldn't recommend going into certain areas at night alone. I don't trust anyone.

Thanks Tom, I'll take the bare minimum along and keep my eyes open!
