Your focal length depends how close you can get to the cars, but I think that might be a little on the short end. However, you could try and put some of the surrounding countryside into the shots to give them some context.

Many ways to skin a cat, but for a 3/4 shot, I would stick the camera in Tv (shutter priority) mode with AI Servo enabled and then adjust my ISO until I got an aperature around f8. This will give enough DoF to get the car sharp front to back on a 3/4 angle if you focus on the right spot.

Take it your for Galway??

As is said above, the lens works depending where you are.
You dont really want to be shooting at f2.8, you will need to have enough of a DOF to take in the car. Iso and shutter speed depend on what the car is doing, if its head on id go for a fast shutter and high-ish iso. same if the car is in the air, and id go ai-servo and set the focus to the center bottom and focus under the car if in the air.

If your looking for a side on panning ( it would work nice with your lens) the above will result as a parked look so you will need go for a slower shutter speed 1/320.

This time of year the light is crap, so you might be changing settings as the day goes on.

If you are there for the two days, try and get at different angles, jumps and panning. its the only way you will really learn.....and most important dont forget to enjoy yourself and the sport.

Good advice from the Simon & Rory. Check out the background of your shot especially with your lens, see Simons shots of Grizedale, beware of the miles of red/white tape! Check out the other threads such as link below, some handy location info. I've not had a look at the Rally site however stage info varies on each rally. Some rallies give you more stage info so you can use tools such as google earth to checkout the route and any potential shooting points. Get there early and walk into the stages if possible. Use YouTube and check out some of the video locations, normally plenty of rally posts by regulars who've found good vantage points. Enjoy but be careful where you stand, make sure you don't put yourself or others at risk!
