View Full Version : New trends... Lucis...

So, I noticed that Lucis has been totally over done and now every single photographer is aware how it is done. This only brings to question, what now? Has anyone seen any new techniques being used? New post processing? Just wondering and want to have a place for us to kick around some new ideas.

Okay, I'll bite, I must be the one photographer who's never even heard of Lucis. What is it?

It has a HDR look. Very expensive plugin. There are threads with it. Its the Dave Hill Look. Very neat for commercial work.

Ok, Im sorry. Where I live it seems every photographer has just destroyed the plugin. Here it is used WAY too much. Kinda like the radio playing the same song over and over...

I took a look at it, and would agree with you. Kind of like 10 years ago when it was novel to crank your photo thru the watercolor filter, and announce you were a photoshop expert.

My question then is... What tasteful technique is waiting to be discovered??? The million dollar question. Well, a couple of thousand at least till its over used and sent to a plugin grave yard.

The watercolor filter is that old? I thought I just disovered it... ugh! jk

You can do the lucis arts plug-in in ACR. All it is is pumping the fill light, increasing contrast and compensating with the recovery tool.

I had thought the plugin was discontinued.

To be replaced with lucis Pro at a much higher cost...

In the digital age, as soon as a new style becomes somewhat popular, it is pretty much overdone over night. IMO, I try to let my photograph and vision lead me to the end result so that each photograph represents its own unique look or style....at least that's the goal I strive for :)

BUT how did we ever survive before HDR ?
I still haven't tried it I use something called filters. They go on the front of the lens when you take the photograph, remember them?

Kind of like, "I remember those plastic boxy things... what were they again? Oh yeah, VHS and audio cassettes." Haha - time to move on old man.
Lol, just kidding, but you should try HDR it can save a lot of photos where the lighting situation is too much for the sensor to handle and GND can't help, which for me happens A LOT!

The old fashioned term for that situation is "bad lighting."
If an individual finds those kinds of lighting conditions on a regular basis then it could be an indication that he or she is a bad photographer.

Lol, how bout you stop following me. It's pretty sad that you have to resort to insults, by the way. Luckily for you I'm a Christian, and I won't sink to that level. :)

who is following who? I was there before you in both threads.
BTW - what's with your condescending first post to me? You called me a liar and said I didn't know what I was talking about. Was that your Christian way of making friends?

Nevermind who's christian and who isn't, those things shouldn't be a part of this thread or we'll have a full scale jihad by page 3 ;).
Jesse: You may not know it, but we may already be there.

For one, my post in this thread was not directed at you, so you did not need to comment, especially the way you did. And I absolutely did not call you a liar. I'm not sure where you're getting this from. I was just pointing out that some of what you were saying isn't true. That doesn't make you a liar, nor did I accuse you of being one.

I think the best new effect, and one not seen too frequently, is great white balance and attention to the way the light falls. A lot can be done to accentuate this in post.
Just the white balance thing can make an amazing difference in an image. Over use of actions and copying the work of others is not art. (But it may sell images) :)

poloman, care to share an example, perhaps a before and after? I think we would all appreciate it!

Here is a quick example of the difference white balance can make. Don't have time to go combing through too many images. The lighting in the church where this wedding was held was hideous. Of course, you could just go B&W instead. :)

Great job poloman! Indoor lighting can be such a pain in the butt. RAW is such a lifesaver for these types of situations.

Thanks...One of my latest big endeavors is to get really good at white balance and color balance.
At this particular wedding, the bridesmaid's dresses actually looked blue in some of the shots.
I always shoot RAW. I don't tend to loose things that way. It allows me to shoot in a photojournalistic style and still retain good quality.

The current trend in wedding photography is textures and heavy post-processing. Jesh de Rox started the textures movement http://www.jeshderox.com/ and the Boutwells are leaders in the sale of funky actions for wedding photographers.
