ok, i waited to see if any bugs showed up with the new firmware version 1.04, and decided to give it a go.

i have seen the posts about underexposure, but did it anyway, and sure enough, my D60 is underexposing.

with that, i reinstalled the firmware 1.02 and everything is back to normal.
oh well, i guess some D60's work with the new firmware and others don't.

As a general rule, I guess you shouldn't update firmware unless you've got the problems that the update is supposed to fix.

As regards black thumbnails, I've only experienced this once. It was pretty mysterious at the time, but I was relieved that on conversion the images were there.

Not sure about the other problem. Maybe I've got it but not realised it. What are the symptoms?

Hi Rayz,

It has been beaten to death but here goes.....

Put the camera into Continuous drive mode and set the quality to RAW. Take a shot and immediatly look at the red light that is supposed to flicker on the CF card door (actually recessed in a little hole in the door). Does it flicker, if yes try the experiment again, if not, press the shutter release button half way and the light should now flicker.

There is a very good chance that unless you have firmware 1.04, you will experience the problem very quickly, within the first 10 or so shots.

What the light represents is the writing of the data (image) from the camera's memory (buffer) onto the CF card.

The problem is that if you turn the camera off after it has failed to write to the card, and you havn't pressed the shutter release button half way, you will loose the image (or images if you have just shot of a few frames in continuous mode).

As for the underexposing issue, my camera has always underexposed. It is better to underexpose than to overexpose. It underexposes no more (or no less) since the upgrade. I just use the exposure compensation feature of the camera, that's what it is there for. It also appears that the degree of under exposing is lens dependant. An L series seems to work better than a non L lens.

Pat.

Pat,
Thanks for the explanation. I don't recall ever having lost an image in this way. However, I mostly use continuous mode for AEB only and I've disabled automatic shut off. Got fed up with attempting to take photos when the camera was switched off. Also, turning that on/off switch to and fro so frequently didn't seem a good idea.

I also find it irritating when I come to shoot and the camera has shut off automatically. It is worth pointing out, however, that it can be 'woken up' again by simply depressing the shutter button half way down, rather than using the main on/off switch.
