Been working on a flick for the last week or so. We're maybe half way through production, and we've shot most of it with my planar 50. I've marked all over the focus ring with a number 2 pencil and shooting video with it is such a pleasure.

Anyway, can't share any stills, but here's some behind the scenesies.

this is truly amazing.
I wanna pick this lens up from someone on craigslist, but if I get the matte focusing screen how does it change what I see when I put on a Auto Focus Lens and what I see?

Thank you!
I don't know... I use all kind of lenses, not fast ones.
This lens works perfect with regular focusing screen on 5Dc.

I can think of times when I'll need it for 1.4 (really dark) and will hopefully have time to focus. Skill, is another story. I generally don't like to manually focus at anything wider than F4. But, that's on a 24-70L for the most part and doesn't have the nice, weighted ring. I might just take the plunge and try to learn it.

The pics on this page i posted are 1.8 (organ) and 1.4 (couple). It is not that hard, i tend to stay between 1.4-2.8 usually. I basically did the whole wedding with this lens and a zuiko 21mm 3.5 with a rare use of 35L (first dance). I find it somehow calming to just stop there and really get to know what you are looking for.

Fair enough. Honestly, I'm not against manual anything. I do it "the hard way" in lots of my hobbies. I think the computers do a bit too much sometimes. ;) However, I do want to know my limits, and miss as few shots as possible. I shoot street a lot, and the difference in auto and manual means getting a shot or completely botching it sometimes.

FWIW, I would only be using 1.4 in a few situations (one coming up next month). I was out at Burning Man this year and followed the "take one lens, tape it up, and don't change it" mentality. Having said that, there was a LOT of stuff at night I simply missed b/c I could only go to 2.8. I think next time, and for the upcoming regional event, I want a fast prime.

Burning man is a place where I will one day go. I hope.. haha

I do streets a lot as well and to be fair you still preset the focus either way as for me AF was just too slow (7D +35L, 85 sigma, now i have 5Dc + precision screen). MF will always be my way of shooting street.

Burning man is a place where I will one day go. I hope.. haha

The UK was well-represented in our camp. ;) It really is unbelievable. The only disappointment is that I did not "go out and shoot" more than an hour or two at a time, and only a few times. I was more of a part of the event, than an observer (dressed up in tutus and hot pants, and all that jazz). I will hopefully fix that in subsequent events. I got about 125 unique keepers once it was all said and done, but I was assuming I'd have about 400 or so from about 1500 to choose from. Oh, well -- had the time of my life. No complaints!

Fair enough. Definitely a lot of truth to that. I'm keeping up w/ the other 50mm threads, and the 50mm 1.4 sounds like a total crap shoot (at best). From the review I read, the 50L is not exactly worth the money (not as sharp as a prime should be). According to that article, it is a good lens, but an L lens should be a great lens, as they have great lens prices.

I was really saving up for the Zeiss 100 Makro-Planar, which I think I would use, but I think this would have more immediate use... and is about 1/3 the price, which helps. ;)

That's substantially more dough though... if I'm going to spend a lot, I'd rather get the 100 MP, but that's like, another step up. Woe is me. I'll figure it out though. ;)

Yes, in close up range it's soft (I prefer to call it 'dreamy') wide open, but in medium or long range it's still usable for my use.
Btw, I like your usage of this lens' 'dreamy effect' in close up shots!

One from me, wide open.

Sorry if I post too much, but I really like the lens and have quite a few I'd like to share.

This one is at f/2.8 and I think has some 3D to it with the way the cherub pops.

It's great to see we've got some new blood in here.

Jam -- You've got some wonderful equipment. I've only tried the 2/35 on a crop and not on FF, but from what others say the 1.4/50 and 2/35 do have different personalities. The 1.4/50 is best suited to medium to long distance work. Like the 50L it has uncorrected spherical abberation that produces a nice background blur quality, but makes it not so great at MFD near wide open. It also has focus shift that has to be accounted for when shooting f/2.8 to f/4 at shorter distances. I love the look of the images it produces. Many people seem to prefer the 2/50 MP. Maybe that lens would compliment your 50L better?

I have a bunch of 1.4/50 images here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68255851@N05/tags/zeissplanart1450/

That last photo of..." the storage area that is recessed into the ground" ....is probably either a root cellar or a an ice house. Back in the early days of the past century and well before....country people used to have storage areas like that to keep root vegetaboes and/or ice for long term storage.

I recall seeing an ice house like that in Minnesota in the '60's. Ice would be cut in big chunks out of a frozen lake during the winter and brought back by horse/sled or truck and deposited in these storage areas. The ice would then be covered in sawdust, etc and the the under ground would generally keep the storage area relatively cool for preservation.

I remember getting ice in May, June this way.

Here are a couple to show the personality of the lens taken immediately after each other.

First, wide open at f/1.4.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/8729528045_b1dbfdb00e_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68255851@N05/8729528045/)

Second, stopped down to f/2.8.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7310/8729527915_f337ff5c1e_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/68255851@N05/8729527915/)

The lens is clearly sharper when stopped down to f/2.8, but I like the wide open image better in this case because of the rendering style. The vignetting of neither shot has been modified.

Having them two together what are your opinions?

The 35 Zeiss is much more like my MP100. The Zeiss pop and 3d look. The 50 is more like 2 or 3 lenses in one. If you shoot it around 4.0 or slower it has the look of the 35. If you are faster it takes on a more film like quality and backlit wide open the non corrected elements are really something. It can make the backgound almost look like a painting. Black and White is really cool looking on the 50. The 35 is much easier to shoot fast because of the focus and it is more consistent from shot to shot.

Many thanks for the reply. It does sound like it has unique different characteristics. Now, it's a close fight between the 50/1.4 vs. 50MP for my next lens.

That's exactly what I think. I was in Venice a few weeks ago and took some portraits with the green water and yellow, blue and red houses in the background and it really looked like a painting.

Here is an example right out of camera (except the black square:D) at f/1.4:
