332789
1/15s,f2.8 ISO800

Just resized this one, the noise is from 5D :p
I think Zeiss will be my general walk-around lens from now on...
The colours here are just truthful. At f1.4 perhaps bit soft in focus, but stepped down to 2.0 this lens will start rock!
Superior in color and tone compared to my EF lenses, kind of a "the good old times" -lens.
Just falling in love...

Nice. Is that a new optic or one of the classics? I'm assuming classic based on your "good old times" comment.

Brand new: https://photo-shop.zeiss.com/epages/cz.sf/en_GB/?ViewObjectID=3104978&Locale=en_GB and an classic. Softer traditional focus from film ages?

I have one of these and the 50mm 2.0 Makro-Planar. I'm really impressed with both. The 1.4 is nice and compact and makes a great walkaround. Anything from a 5D up should be fine to MF given the very fine focus ring. Rare I get an OOF shot these days.

Took some time to get to manual focusing again... last time I had a MF lens was in my F-1 soo long ago. Nowdays I'm too comfortable with the AF lenses...:D The only back stroke is that Zeiss is all metal, so its so cold in -15°C... Freezes your fingers when focusing...

I like this lens! Great soft bokeh in front and in the back. Digital makes everything oversharp anyways... Off focus is different to soft focus...
Again, great colours in a low light. And the thrash can is watching you...

Don't know. To me this lense is something from the "analog" times when there was no thing as "sensor" and all pictures were taken in to a "film". This is just a great lens overall... takes you back when photography was something else than automated smile-recognitions and all nonesense like IS or AF and all that. It is fun to go around with an all analog lens... :p
I like it! Some rude industrial bokeh... townlike or something.

This may be it...There are a couple in here that are pretty damn nice. For example the stringed instrument and the portrait of the older fellow.

I understand this completely and I am the exact same way. :) I got a few M42 (is this correct?) mounted lenses, the kind that you had to screw into the body haha. Got an adapter and man, they are fun to play with.

However, for all the hype this lens gets for its industry leading IQ or w/e, it should be performing a lot better than what I have seen. Even the guy over at The Digital Picture had quality problems with his.

Well the 'problem' with this gear is you don't record EXIF data so therefore how do you know what lens took what half the time? I got the 50mm 2.0 and the 1.4. I have no idea which lens took what. Maybe I'll shoot a few of each specially for ya ;)

There's a fair lot of CA in a lot of these shots, isn't there? I'm digging my cheapie Planar 50/1.4 Contax bayonet lens, though, although you do need to manually stop down. Price is right, too (about 1/4 of the ZE mount), and if you've got a 5D you suddenly have aperture control while filming...

Does no one have any serious shots to post that were taken with this lens? It seems like everyone is just posting up junky test shots...well I'll tell you this...this post does not speak good for this lens as nothing quite so spectacular has been posted up. Except...that one portrait is pretty darn nice.

So far this post shows a PoS. Prove me wrong.......

..or, as mentioned above, an older Contax/Zeiss 50/1.4 with an adapter. Paid about 100 bucks for mine including AF confirm adapter. Yes, it's stop-down metering, but it works for me.

I still may buy the Sigma as well :-)

You'd need to sample quite a number of copies of each to back that up IMO. Having owned each of them I would disagree on both counts. I haven't kept track, but the early concerns with the Sigma was some samples with lots of lateral CA and/or soft wide open (as mine was). The Sigma isn't half the price either ... at least in the UK. The Zeiss is around £120 more. Personally, I would recommend most people go for a good copy of the Sigma over the Zeiss, unless you prefer MF and high build quality/feel ... many do, including me most of the time at this range.

I can't understand all the criticism off this lens, i just a fantastic lens in every way, and
has an amazing bokeh...the only complaint is slightly high contrast, but that is easily fixed
in raw conversion...

Here is an example:

It also makes even the Canon L lenses seem like something you get as a surprise
toy when ordering a meal at Mc Donalds... :-)

It's not double in the US either. It's a $150-200 variance, depending on where you get each.

That's a very nice shot indeed. Welcopme to POTN.

I'm not sure on the contrast. This is typical of Zeiss and one reason I like them. They aren't wishy-washy in any way. They are bold but on the whole natural.

I must say I love this lens more than my 24-70 f2.8 L and 70 -200 f2.8 L because it is so compact that it is perfect for daily use.

I mount this lens onto my 5dMarkII every where I go and I must admit that this is the lens I use the most to capture my daily life.

Although mine is not a ZE mount, I don't see the difference between my Contax version and the ZE version.
With the right AF confirm adapter, this lens rocks!

Also, anyone can find this lens used on ebay at a low price too!

Feel free to browse my flickr photostream to see some test shots I did with this lens.

Maybe this lens is too much to some people who depend on L lenses... "Zeiss can't do what Canon does with one third of the price" I just love how this lens is as it is. no sharpening or pp for the above pictures. Notice the drastic difference in color. (though i think AWB made things screwy)

This was the day I returned the Sigma (third copy still front focus) for a Zeiss. I really wanted a good copy, but I'm happier with my Zeiss now than I was with the Sigma. They're both sharp in the center but sigma's sharpness reaches further in the frame wide open. Zeiss gives portraiture a great look. The color can't be matched, Zeiss glass really surprised me with that. Stopped down to 2.5 and the sharpness is great.

Anyway, more pictures of Zeiss below.

Will work fine, but the crop factor may make it as bit narrow for you. I'd prefer a 25mm or 35mm on a crop body. Personal taste and depends what you want to do with it. Both are great lenses. I use the Zeiss 25mm and 50mm 2.0 on a FF.

nice lens, I have one myself.
I absolutely love this lens. The contrast and colours are beautiful. As far as manual focus goes, if you calibrate your camera to the lens (5DmkII) then auto confirmation gives you 100% in focus...every single time.

This is not a lens for sports with fast moving subjects, but it does get you to THINK before going 'click' on that shutter.
Zeiss, keep bringing em on please...

The color rendition and contrast is way more punchy than the Canon 50/1.4 and I think the strong contrast adds to the overall sharpness of the images. If it wasn't for the 50/2 Makro, I would get this for my Canon.

any comparo shots with the EF 50/1.4?

There is no comparison between this and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 on any level. This just out performs in every category. Which it should, cause it hasn't wasted anything for AF, and yet still costs twice as much.

A better comparison would be between the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L.

I have been looking for said comparisons, but not found any. It might be that I have to take this on myself. Not sure how good a job I will do, never havin done anything like that before. I will let you know if I ever do manage to finish a review.

Taken at the Minnesota State Fair. Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE at f/2.

This was a fairly recent purchase for me, to fill out my focal-length gap between my 17-40 and 70-200 in preparation for my honeymoon later this year. I contemplated for some time which 50mm to get, and finally settled on the Zeiss. I've otherwise shot on friends' Canon f/1.4 and f/1.8 lenses, and wanted something a little, well, different.

The colors from the lens are amazing - I have rarely felt the need to increase saturation with images coming from my Zeiss. Sharpness is quite good, although wide-open near minimum-focus is somewhat soft (most lenses are at minimum distance).

Build quality is far far beyond the Canon f/1.4 and f/1.8, although I can't speak to the f/1.2 since I've never held one. The Zeiss is built like a tank, and I really really like the dampening on the focus ring (I've also been shooting film recently, and have been reminded how smooth the focus rings were on older lenses). The focus ring's fine-focus ability is also very nice, as it takes nearly a half turn to go from minimum focus distance ~1.5' to 4', and nearly another quarter turn more to infinity... At least on par with my macro lens. You'll want the superfine focus screen, though.

If you can't live without automatic focus, don't bother with this lens. But whenever I'm shooting on a prime, I almost always shoot manual focus anyway, so this isn't an issue for me.

I love the color rendition of the blues made by this lens. I'm thinking its the neutral color profile (opposed to the warmer one in Canon lenses) that really creates a difference to me.

BlueTsunami

I dont think lenses have color profiles per se?

Not in the software sense but just in the way the lens renders the color (due to the lens coating). Canon lenses are known for warmer images, Zeiss lenses tend to be straight up neutral. From what I've experienced, a warmer overall color tone in an image tends to take the punchines away from blues.

Alrighty. I admit it. This lens is absolutely amazing. I take back all the bad things I said towards the beginning of this thread.

I finally got a chance to test this lens. Have some nice 100%s for you all. No sharpening. No noise reduc. Nothing that would affect detail. The shot is at ISO 3200, 5d mkII at f/4.0. Close to MFD I think.

Beautiful imagery!

You definately do Justice with this lens.

Definately the best image/dolllar value in the 50mm category (at least to me). As many have said, there is no comparison to this lens vs the EF 1.4. Have used both extensively, everything from contrast (the EF is extremely washed out in comparison), sharpness, and much more beautiful bokeh rendering makes the Zeiss 50 ZE (i use the ZF) superior.

One of my fav's but I am planning on swapping to the F2 Macro 50 Planar and see how it performs!

Hi, just a simple question, this is a manual only lens right? And as I understand it, the green light inside the viewfinder will go off if focus is attained? Will the camera beep also?

And, will this function still work if I select the other (non center) focus point?

Thank you.

Yes the focus point will light up and the camera will beep (if the beep is not disabled in the camera)

It works with all the focus points.

It's exactly the same as with an AF lens, but now you'll just have to twist the focusring yourself instead of a motor doing it for you :)

i've got no MF lens experience. will it work on a 7D? i was testing a rokinon 85 1.4 and had a terrible time trying to get focus. that one did not give focus confirmation via the beep or light in the viewfinder. also, is the aperture on this manual? or can it be changed in camera

Damn you people, got me questioning myself...I want this lens. This or the 135L. Which ever I decide to go with would be my only lens for a while until I could afford something else to add to the collection. What focusing screens are people using on the 5Dc?

Nysa
30th of June 2010 (Wed), 00:29
I have all three Canon screens for the 5D, but with primes (which I'm most often shooting these days) I stick with the Ee-S (superfine focus). It's amazing how much it helps find correct focus, particularly with faces.

If I'm going out with my wide-angle zoom, I'll sometimes switch to the composer screen, mostly for assistance taming the horizon.

Thanks! I posted the PP info on another forum. This is generally my starting point and I adjust accordingly depending on the picture since not all pics were taken in same light.

as far as the PP goes, during the trip i shot all in JPEG and will typically use "Cloudy" WB to give it some warmth.

I process the vietnam pics all in LR, for shots that was taken in AWB .. I'll usually do +6 for WB setting to add warm colors to it

i usually start with standard adjustments below (and adjust depending on the pic)
- WB +6 (for temp)
- Fill Light +5, Black +2, Contrast + 10
- Clarity +20, Vibrance +29, Saturation -10 (-15)
- Tone Curve = Medium Contrast, with some adjustments to dark and shadows when necessary
- Saturation = Red -3, Orange -10
- Add some vignetting

hope that helps :)
