ok, I have a 1ds and a 550 flash. I just want the thing to point and shoot in low light automatically. What camera settings and flash settings do I use?

I use ISO 400 at least, it reduces the flash power needed, which means the battery lasts longer and it recharges more quickly between shots. I shoot in M mode, 1/40th - 1/80th, and I vary the aperture depending on what I need.

I was under the impression that this flash with this camera all worked together without me having to think. I guess I was wrong. Im too old to think

If you really don't want to think, then set the camera on Green Box and set the flash on standard E-TTL, which is the normal way it comes up.
As you develop more curiosity, try the camera in P mode and then explore out from there. I don't use the advanced flash modes much, but they are there and they work. Wireless master-slave stuff is kind of neat.

I didn't think that the 1Ds had a Green Box mode or did I get ripped off with my 1DmkII which doesn't have it?

Me too...
All that money, and I didn't get a green box mode with all my 1-Series.

Silly.
The only five models of Canon EOS digitals I've held had Green Boxes, so I falsely assumed.
I still think P mode works fine.

I like to futz around and tinker with things since it's more fun that way, so I think I'm going to get the mode dial off of my 10D and see if I can attach it to my 1DmkII. That way, not only will I have access to the Green Box mode but to the A-DEP mode since Canon saw fit to leave out the DEP mode from the mkII.

Leo, what you can do...
Pry off the mode dial from a 10D and pry off the mode dial from a 1D, then swap them. Take the 1D into a Canon dealer and start asking mode questions. That ought to get a couple of laughs.
