I am heading to NYC for a couple days in 2 weeks and I want a bag to just carry my 40D with 17-40 attached, and maybe a battery or 2. I don't want to take my whole backpack and I want something small I can just throw over my shoulder. Thanks for any help.

You mean, you want a shoulder bag? These I actually have: :)
Domke F-5X
http://www.amazon.com/Domke-F-5XB-Shoulder-Belt-Black/dp/B00009R89L/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231520418&sr=8-1
Lowepro holster bag
http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Topload-Holster-Camera-Green/dp/B00009R8BP/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231520472&sr=1-9
Crumpler 4 Mil

Of these I'd recommend the holster bag because it's cheap and still can do the job.

4MDH won't hold it. The 5MDH would be better. I'd say the Crumpler or Domke.

Domke F-5XB
Perfect small bag. Though I did get told it looks like a purse by 5 family members over the holiday.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will go with one of the Lowepros.

I have 2 blue Domke bags and I don't think that at all. They don't look like camera bags or have a huge "I have an expensive camera inside here!" sign on them. :)

I'd go with an F-5XB as well.

To the OP: if price is of no concern, the Shootsac is another possibility.
Question about the Domke -- will it hold a 70-200 f4 (ignoring lens hood), a 17-55, a 50/1.8, and an XSi body? (I'm debating the $50 Domke and a $180 Shootsac for wandering around weddings or parties -- I don't want to take a Kata 3N1-20 around either of those two functions... it'd make a good travel kit or all-day bag, but not for indoor stuff imo)
[Edit: none of the lenses need be attached when all the equipment is in the bag, but everything listed does need to fit all at once.]

i vote for Crumpler's 5 Million Dollar Diaper Bag
or the 6mdh if you see yourself getting a grip and flash in the near future

The F-5XB holds my ungripped 5D with a 24-70 and a 580EX snugly. For what you've listed, look at the F-3x or maybe the F-6, F-4AF or F-808.

Blimey! Suppose I stray out of the Domke family; how'd the Crumpler 5 MDH do with this fare?
[Edit: I'll take a look at the Domkes; just wanted to get a feel for whether the 5MDH is also too small.]

Not a Crumpler fan; they seem to have inflated names. From what I know, you probably want a $6MDH for that (and not much more) though.

The reason why I like the Domke bags is because they look like the old army canvas bags that will hold up in a war zone, but with a more contemporary design. The Lowepro holster bags are what I started out with and I still use them, but the Domke bags don't look like camera bags. Now, don't get me wrong, the OP should consider some of the small holster Kata bags. Those are interesting looking, the designs are unique. But for the price, I think the Lowepro would be just fine.

The Domke F-4AF will fit your gear perfectly, hoods reversed, flash in the side pocket. In the main compartment, the 70-200 f/4 mounted on a XTi sticks above the bag by about 3/4", but really doesn't matter. A mounted 17-55 fits fine, hood revered.
I'm also not a crumpler fan. Way too urban sassy for me.

To the OP: according to Jon's post answering mine, it does sound like the Domke F5-XB suits your needs exactly.
I don't want to drag this off in a different direction, so I'll probably create a new thread just to avoid confusion.

Domke F-3x would be my choice!

Really I just want something as small as possible that I can just throw my camera in and then over my shoulder when I'm not shooting (class trip so lots of non-shooting times) and have my camera and lens protected.

Lowepro Classified 140. I carried this all around Istanbul for a week, and left my backpack at the hotel. It has no external colorful embroidery that shouts "Camera bag! Steal me!" and is very comfortable to wear all day. You can carry the camera out at night with the handle as well. It's just big enough for a body and lens attached, and another lens or a light as shown. Extremely well-made, with an All Weather cover.
I looked at a dozen bags before I found this at recommendation of the salesperson at B&H.

It will work to carry the 14-70 lens attached to the body. You can put another lens in the space next to the camera OR a light, not both. An extra battery and several AA's for the flash will easily fit in the flap pocket or the pocket on the back of the bag.
I also wanted something "as small as possible" and this was the bag I chose.
