design student need help

Hey guys. I am a design student at UW and we just got our first project. we need to take a photograph depicting value, light v dark and right now i am suffering from a severe brain fart and can't think very well so i came to you guys for some advise. just throw out ideas, words, examples, tips, thoughts, buddhist proverbs, motivation...THANKS!

Huh, kinda odd how some posts randomly just don't get any replies, esp. ones like these where people can contribute ideas.


Anyway, by light vs. dark, I'm assuming you mean light vs. dark in a metaphorical sense, not literally. In that case...

- A silhouetted picture of someone (back to the camera) standing in a dark tunnel/cave, looking out at the light might be cool.

- Picture of a single street light on a dark road might be cool too.

Find a dark room, light a candle

It seems like this would be an easy project, until you try to come up with ideas

chessboard at high contrast in BW
Car lights at night
Cityscapes at night.
the moon
Street light
reflection in coffee
light painting (move light in dark place during long exposure)
reflections of bright lights in anything
catchlights in an eye
a black cats eyes
white fungus on dark trees
white and black cats, dogs, birds, etc You could use a dark environment and the different reflectivity to get a nice effect.
I think this is easy. Just think instead of looking for a reference.

i'm not really looking for a specif reference, i'm just trying to figure out what else people are thinking.

so i took some pics and i wanted to make them black and white so i went to photoshop and turned down the saturation. but the definition of blacks and whites were fairly muttled and it just didnt look as crisp as i wanted.

Nice idea.
Use high pass sharpen. Google Ron Bigelow.
I saw this a couple of days ago.
Start with your color image.
Create a new blank layer and fill it with 100% black.
Set blending mode to saturation. Works very well.
