And that question is:
"How much does your creditcard company charge you to process transactions?"
I just purchased a new body. The price was $2550. I asked the question and the answer was 3%.
3% of $2550 is $76.50. I offered to pay by check instead of creditcard if they would discount the camera price by $35 down to $2515. That gives the store an additional $41.50 in profit.
They said yes - I wrote the check. I'm sure stores you deal with will also accept cash, and cashier's checks (under certain conditions) also.
Caveats:
- You have to have the money in your checking account. Don't be writing no worthless paper because you won't be shooting many pics from jail.
- You'll probably have to be known. Most likely, if you are a strange face in the shop they may not do it. They tend not to like receiving worthless paper.
- You are not afforded the same protections as when paying by creditcard, but again, if this is somebody you've worked with before it should not be a problem (if they value your business.)
