Well, it's a photo at f/1.8.
You know, it is almost essential that people try out their wide apertures when they get new fast lens. But like everything else - shallow DoF does not equate 'pleasing choice of DoF'. And this is a good example.
Yes, you correctly set the lens to f/1.8.
No, it does not suit the image, based on the fact that the deer's head is out of focus. I recommend choosing your DoF based on your scene and desired outcome.

Thanks Deckham ,,,thats what i thought . the deers head is OOF. Thanks for your input deckham . its a fun lense to play with . I cant seem to take it off my XTI . I find myself taking many pics messing around with DOF. Only doing this for a year now (Photography that is) lol. thanks again.

Using fast lens is a lot of fun - and the mere unusual-ness of it is a bit of a wow factor, especially if it's your fastest lens :)

your right ,,hit the nail right on the head . it is my fastest lense at this tieme . looking for a better port lense. any suggestions?

I just got one yesterday and it has not come off of my XS since I got it home...lol

I know its very fun to mess around with. I do have a problem playing with the settings. while taking a photo of two people , some times one of the subjects is OOF. Its a matter of playing with the f-stops , i think lol....
