Anyone think I should pick up th $999 kit at B&H photo, or should I get the basic camera and choose a different, possibly better lens?

I'm not looking to spend alot more than $999 to get started, but if it's going to improve my shots tenfold I'd make the sacrifice. I know it's a balance of camera, lens and photographer, but I dont want one aspect to bottleneck my potential.

Does the 18-55mm focal length satisfy your need for range?

If the wide end is unimportant, for similar $$$ you could pick up a 50mm 1.8 and have a more useful lens indoors that produces much sharper images.

I just bought the kit, and frankly, I'm unimpressed with the kit lens. However, I'm a novice to the digital SLR world, so it may be "me" that I should be unimpressed with. :)

I sold me 300D and kit lens to buy a 20D, and I got the kit lens again. It's a cheap wide angle. I use it very rarely, I use my Tamron 28-75 70% of the time, my 50mm 1.8 20% of the time, and my 100mm macro the rest of the time. Must get a longer lens some time.
