Does anyone know if a 18-55 kit lens that has been modded to fit a 10D will still fit and work properly on a Rebel 300D. Thanks for your expertise.

Yes. The mod removes the black protrusion at the rear of the lens. The only purpose it serves on this lens is to prevent it from mounting on an EF mount. When removed it becomes a regular EF lens and will fit any EF or EF-S camera.

How do you remove it?

Knowing that you have a 1Ds, we won't tell you

Seriously ... it's a 'hack' that is normally done with a hacksaw ... nothing much to it than getting away a piece of plastic from the lensmount. Search the Internet, there are how-to's.

However, it you put it on a camera other than the 10D (and maybe the D60 and D30, but I don't know about those for sure) with less than the 1.6 crop factor, the rear element will most likely hit the mirror and the repair to your camera will be as much as a used 20-35 lens (or a new 17-40, depending on your camera  )

Best regards,
Andy

The EF-S 18-55 is so cheap feeling that look like my daughter's toy. Will try to open it up and see how to modify it to fit in regular EF mound.

You don't have to open it.

You just have to take away the plastic rim that is not on the mount of your other EF lenses with a power tool.

No kidding ... DO NOT MOUNT IT ON A FULL FRAME CAMERA.

Andy

why would you want to put the EFS on ur EF 1Ds.
Not worth the risk stated earlier, don't you think?

The EF-s 18-55 is so cheap looking and it's front element turns when I turn the rear cap, that I don't bother to buy any filter to protect the front element.

Besides a MC Hoya cost 1/3 of the 18-55.

I didn't think the rear element protruded past the end of the regular EF mount on the 18-55mm. Am I wrong?

Shaun,

at least Canon suggested that this was the case ... that is what makes it an EF-S lens.

Unless you have specific knowledge from somewhone who measured the lens thoroughly and suspects it is only a ploy of the evil Canon marketers to get full frame users to buy the more expensive lenses, I would not put my money on it.

What you *will* get for sure on a full frame body, will be a case of severe vignetting or edge blurriness. At least that would prevent successful use of the lens on the wide end.

Best regards,
Andy

Seriously though,. mounting an EFS lens on a FF camra could seriously damge the camera. The Shutter/mirror will hit the back of the lens.

Here are the instructions if you like to attempt the conversion:

those instructions are way unnecessary.

1) buy precision screw driver set, and small hand hack saw at wal mart - 5$

2) remove mount, remove rubber thing, and you will see a groove where the blade should fit perfectly in.

3) over a trash can, put the blade in the groove and saw all the way though. wash it off, and reinstall

thats all there is to it.

I don't understand why anybody would want to risk damaging a thousand dollar EF mount camera just so they can use a cheap, hacked EF-S lens on it. I'm sure the cost to repair any damage caused by the mirror hitting the lens would cost more than the cost of the kit lens itself.

I will try it because we can the new lenses on EF body:
- EF-S 10-2mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (10mm wide angle, can you imagine).
- EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Marco USM

According to the page linked, above, the rear element will extend just barely beyond the modified mount.

From the above linf http://members.cox.net/byteseller/EFS-WEB/EFS-WEB.html
- It clearly shows that after the modification, the rear element extended outward a little bit beyond the EF style mount.
- But it also shows that the modification works with 10D (regular 35mm EF mount body), in 18mm focus length (the rear element extend the most).

So can the person whom did the modification post a bigger JPG to show the clearance of:
1. The 35mm EF mount body required.
2. The modified EF-S mount clearance compare to EF mount.

I've modified mine- not to use on the 10D/30D bodies but just so i could experiment with it on an EOS film camera:D ;)
....yes i have too much time on my hands it seems.

Anyway here is a pic taken @ 18mm (with the mirror locked up so as to cause no damage)

I've done lots of measurements in the past but have now forgotten them all.I'll redo them and get back

So the modified EF-S will cause vignetting on full frame.

That's no good. I have to re thing again.

Why would you need to hack up the EF-S lens? Sigma makes an 18-50mm DC lens that will fit the D30/60 & 10D as well as the newer 1.6x bodies? The lens costs a grand total of ~$100. You could finance this lens likely with the sale of the EFS lens.

Then you don't have a cut up mutalated EFS lens. But as someone said none of these will work on full frame bodies. I mounted my Sigma 18-125mm on my Elan film body, ugg! What an ugly view.
