How long after you inquire about NYIP do they send you a coupon. I am pretty sure I want to try it but I heard they send a $100-$200 coupon after you inquire if you wait. I can wait a little while for that, it has been about 2 weeks now, I suspect it must be a lot longer.

Keep waiting, you'll get a better one than that... And for me it was a few months and I never signed up. I learned more here faster than I ever would with their program.

Does anyone have a coupon code handy?

I heard from my good friend that took the course that they send a discount in the brochure they send you. They also give you a discount if you pay one lump sum instead of monthly installments.
GOOD LUCK!

I ended up giving them a call and they were more than happy to give me a discount over the phone to use online. It brought the price down to $748 paid up front compared to $898. Not to bad. Wish I could opt out of the bonuses and just get more off the payment.

How reputable is NYIP? Is it worth the money? How advanced do they get?

How advanced do they get?

This what I am curious about too. Any thoughts?

I am pretty confident they are very reputable, it is clear they have been around for ages. Their material was dated, but apparently it has all been rebuilt from the ground up. I am very close to signing up myself. I might look at alternatives though, but if this qualifies me as a full student, I can easily save that on software I want.

OK, I've spent considerable time researching NYIP and their program and have found this:

Their program is great for those who are not highly motivated, and prefer a structured learning environment. They do not cover anything that you would not find in photography books from amazon or from books recommended by members on this site. They push you to get out of your comfort zone and participate in 'photographic projects/assignments' so you can learn new things. Which may help some of you.

So, after much debate, I decided to save the $1,200 and bought a few more books from amazon.com. I already have about 15 books and have read them all and feel like most of the NYIP course would be redundant for me. I also consider myself a highly motivated individual so I'm already driven to learn as much as possible as fast as possible.

Just thought some of you would like to know.

It's only $748 if you use the coupon and pay in advance. The student ID will save you more than that in academic software discounts. Then you can probably sell the material for a couple hundred bucks on ebay when your done.

Ok, but $748 would still buy a lot of books!

It's not a bad deal, just not for me.

I have understanding exposure, and may get a few others. I've been reading a lot online and through these forums and hired a local photographer for about 4 hours to teach me lighting and help me try out strobist stuff.

I want something that can fill in the gaps I got with my broken path to where I am, also someone to bounce things off of. I figure NYIP is considerably cheaper than constantly hiring a mentor.

Sure, sound's fine, go for it. I'm not here to try and convince you otherwise. Go with what will work best for you.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. I took the course about 8 or 9 years ago. I was shooting film then. The course has changed since then but the basic process is similar now.

Want to mention - NYIP didn't at that time qualify for student discounts (academic software). I'm pretty sure it still dosen't. You'll want to verify that.

NYIP assigns each student a pro photographer to review assignments you submit for each lesson. This alone can be quite beneficial. That instructor can also recommend a submitted image for review by a board (including the President of the school) for "merit awards" (I believe they still do this). Long story short they purchased the rights to some of my images to use on the web or printed material used for NYIP. This paid for some of the tuition costs for me. Definately not big bucks but well worth it!

Was it all worth it? I think its different for everybody. I'd been shooting for some years before the course but there is always something to learn. And if you think you know everything already you might be surprised. They go into areas that may be new to you and may get you interested in different types of shooting.

I called them and they said the student id would allow me to purchase Adobe products at Academic prices, they may be wrong but they did say that was possible. Was one of the questions I had when I called for the coupon code. This is a hobby for me not a profession.

I'm currently enrolled at NYIP. I enjoy it. Yes, most of the things you could learn from buying books but I do not learn well that well. I like listening to them explain things and the fact that they will see my actual work and tell me what I did right/wrong. I did get a student ID card which I know can be used at Ritz Camera (and the movies!) and I'm sure various other places. :D I haven't gotten really far into the course yet, so I have no actually submitted any photos yet..but I'm really excited!
