It's been awhile since busting the gear out, which has been confusing to me. I was sick with the flu for over a month so this is the first time out in awhile - and first for the AHL season. Right away I leaned over to the newspaper photog and asked about the lights, they are MUCH better than last year so spent a lot of time experimenting. Last year couldn't get a good shutter below ISO 1000 - this year I shot a little bit at ISO 400 which was a major confusion. However, most were 1/800 at ISO 800 f/2.8 with the 300 2.8 IS and Canon Mark IIn. The 400 version is on it's way!!
#1 - This is the man I originally went to see. For those that don't know this is Jon "Nasty" Mirasty (google Jon Mirsaty Trevor Gillies for a great fight), who is arguably the best "tough guy" in hockey including the NHL and any other level you want to throw in the mix. I got him in warm-ups and during the first period when he got a few shifts but did not see him the rest of the game. This is a disappointment as was hoping to see him throw down, someday. I hope to do a portrait session with him someday - when is the question.

#2 - This is what's called fanning on the shot. The goalie is actually the backup as the starter was called up to the NHL the day before, or maybe day of this game. He had a breakaway after a nice play but the bouncing puck jumped over his stick on this one.

#3 - "I scored a touchdown" - no wait, a goal. The teams captain starts to celebrate as the goalie is in the foreground not so happy. The captain would later be greeted by teammates as the peasants rejoiced.

#4 - A goalie named Brodeur brings thoughts of Marty, this however is Mike Brodeur (yes he's related, distant cousin). He was signed to a 25 game PTO which is a tryout contract, and was recently named to the All-Star team. So in other words today it was announced he signed a contract for the rest of the season to stay with the Amerks. Played brilliant in this game and is very much a stand up (literally) goalie.

#5 - MINE! The visiting goalie jumps on a rebound before it can be knocked in the net. Wow, white balance issues, this one has to be fixed. That end of the rink seemed to be darker and throwing me off a bit. Glass there had a 5 minute major fighting penalty 2 seconds into the game. Good fight but it was at the wrong side as I had the glass in my way (there's no holes in the glass to shoot through).

#6 - Same end, same goalie, same guy named Glass in front screening. I have a lot of shots of this guy, the Amerks put a lot of pressure on there end all night long. For them it was a great game, there third win in a row.

#7 - Mike Janes rules, Mike Janes sucks - guys, guys, don't fight over lil' ol' me! I swear that's why they were fighting, or maybe the game had just got tense as they went up by two so it was clear the gloves needed to be dropped.

#8 - You haven't made it until you get this lady pounding on the glass behind you as you're named the first star of the game. It's AHL rules, look it up, I dare ya. Mr. Brodeur raises his stick to the fans.
