Hi, I am new and have recently gotten PS Elements 3. This is my first exposure to Photoshop, I have only done things in Microsoft Digital Image Pro before. I have read the Sticky on Photoshop selections, but still have some questions.

Say I want to make a fairly close-up cut-out of a person with lots of wispy hair to put on a card; or I want to make a cut-out of a long-haired rough collie dog (like Lassie); is this possible in Elements 3 without great trouble? I have been trying to accomplish this using the various selection tools, but they are all very difficult to use with this type of subject.

I read in Rick Sammon's book about using the Extract filter, and I looked for it in my Elements 3 and couldn't find it? Then I read about using the Magic Wand. This was hard with the collie, because he is part sable (brown), part white, and when I adjust the pixel tolerance higher, it went wild and selected the background too.

Is the sort of thing I am trying to do, impossible in Elements 3? The tools for hard edges just don't seem to get it, plus it includes a lot of the background with it, and I am not sure how best to do this. Any hints or instructions would be very helpful, thank you in advance. I am using pictures from our trusty G2.

Jessica,

I find 2 things in this forum. One is the people are extremely helpful. The other is that most in this forum use and know Photoshop CS or one of the more expensive versions.
While you'll probably get some good answers here, you might find more people more conversant with Elements 3 in this forum (http://www.adobeforums.com)
Look under Photoshop Elements - Windows and Mac.
