I use 30D and 40D bodies alone with L lenses, but I've never been able to get this type to "look" in my photos, so I'm guessing it was created with a different camera/lens combo. Please take a look and tell me why this photo looks so "real". The hand is just so "alive".
Let the site finish loading...and a photo of someone holding a mixed drink will appear. That's the one I am questioning. Thanks!

Hi
Long lens, large aperture (f4 or less) will give a small depth of field.
Could do it in PP by selecting everything except the hand and softening the rest of the picture
Personally I don't like the arrangement of the fingers.

Appears to me that the glass/hand is being lit separately from the right side.

I agree... there was a light to the right side of the camera, and then the sun was lighting from the back left or so.

To refine my question a little..... the photo "feels" and looks different than anything I've ever shot with my 40D body. The "view" of the photo just looks surreal. Maybe because it was done with a full frame body?? Coupled with a really wide angle lens?

well what gear are you using? Im sure you could use an UWA to get the affect like a 10-22 and just about get the effect. IT would be the same as a 16-35 on FF camera

I use a 40D + 24-70L/70-200L. But that shot just have a "feel" to it that seems different.

well a 24-70 isnt that wide on a crop camera.... try a 10-22 and you will notice a difference.

you could do that with your 24-70, it is the light creating the feeling you are wanting. off camera flash to camera right. the light is coming through the glass and highlighting the fingers. at a guess i would say it is also shot with a cpl which would give you room with aperture and lessen the light reflections and spread.

That's definitely a wide (or even ultra-wide) angle lens, maybe a 17mm lens on a FF or a 10mm lens on a crop.

If you're used to 24mm on your crop then even shooting at 17mm will make a fair bit of distance. Both of these were shot using the 17-55 lens, the perspective distortion was deliberate:

Since then I've bought myself an UWA lens and love the new and creative effects achievable with it.

If I could only go to 24mm at the widest on a crop camera I'd go mad :)
