Buy a 580EXII and be done with it.

Shooting sports indoors can be a challenge. Usually the best solution is a fast lens. Why not pick up a 50mm 1.8 II for about $80 and see if that does it for you.

You can go to the SportsTalk threads to read all about shooting wrestling matches and to see many examples. Good luck!

Check out the strength of the flashes you are interested in (guide number), and the typical distance you will be shooting from.
F num = GN / distance to subject (using consistent units) (at ISO 100)
E.g. 430ex has a GN of 43m.
If you are shoot from 21m, you would use an Fnumber of 43/21 = F2.0
If you do not have a lens this fast you would need to buy a more powerful flash, move closer or shoot at higher ISO.
If your best lens is F4 (e.g. a 70-200 L), and you could only get within 15meters of the action you need a flash with a GN of 15 x 4 = 60 (e.g. 580ex has a GN of 58m).
If you can get to 10m, you need a GN of? ___ x f4.0 = ___
[for your homework, complete the blanks].

Every Canon dSLR camera owner needs a 580EXII, so just start with that flash if you can afford it. In other words, anyone who bought a 40D or more expensive camera needs a 580EXII. :)

When using hot shoe flash, the distance you are shooting from is an essential variable. Although modern flashes will calculate and control light output automatically (if used correctly) it is important to have a working knowledge of flash basics if you want reliable results.
