Hi there
I'm looking for something "wide". The "widest" lens I have is the 50mm.... which is NOT wide at all :)

I would like to get the 24-700 f2.8 L or the 17-40 f4 L... but don't have the money for any of those yet. I saw this one:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=12096&is=GREY

and it is pretty cheap, but I would like to get some comments before I go and buy it. Somebody with experience with the lens? happy with the results? kind enough to publish some examples?

Thanks everybody!

Leo.

Leo,

take a look at this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=48942) where I asked about whether this lens (among others) would be a good choice.

It led me to get the Tamron 28-75/2.8 , which I haven't regretted since.
I also got the 18-55 kit lens, and while it is not stellar, it delivers acceptable performance, especially when stopped down.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,
How you've been?

I sold the 18-55 with my DRebel to get the 20D.... that's why I don't have anything less than 50mm. The tamron one is a good choice but since it is $329... I'd probably wait a bit and get the 17-40 L ($669).

I'll go and take a look at the thread you mentioned. I'm sure it will give me some ideas :)

Best Regards,
Leo.

Hehe,

I've been here, most of the time

The 28-75/2.8 is a great walk-around lens with a very usable focal length.

It is on my camera about 75% of the time, with the other 24.5% going to my newly acquired 50/1.8 MKI and 0.5% to the 18-55, if I need the occasional wide angle shot.

Best regards,
Andy

PS: Nice to hear you made the step to the 20D, as well.
We got you hooked, right  ?

Yeap, I jumped to the 20D. DRebel is a great camera. Took about 4,000 pictures with it. But the oportunity came to upgrade... and I don't regret it!

In my case, my walk around lens is the 50mm and my walk-around-and-do-some-exercise l ens is the 70-200 L. I really like both of them a lot. I would say that I use the 50mm 40% of the time and the zoom 60% of the time. I got used to the weight already :)

The 28mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2 are kind of similar in terms of contruction and optics.

28mm f/2.8 --> 5 elements in 5 groups, linear extension system AFD and 52 mm filter size.
35mm f/2.0 --> 7 elements in 5 groups, linear extension system AFD and 52 mm filter size.

I bought the 35mm f/2.0 because I don't need that wide. The pic here was taken handheld using the 35mm f/2 at 1/6s, f/4 and ISO400. Hope it gives you some idea.

Thanks RedBird,
That's a pretty cool picture... I'm assuming you are happy with your 35mm...

Yes, I am. I mainly use the lens to take pictures of my 18-month-old daughter. The lens gives me flexibility in taking head to full body shots with ease. The lens' sharpness and fast aperture are excellent for its price.

I recently picked up a used 28 2.8 not too long ago for $100. I like it because it is light and has produces pretty sharp shots all around. I try and post some images later on.

I have both the 50 1.8 and the 28 2.8 and except for the angle of view and extra stop on the 50 they are twins. If you like the 50 you'll like the 28.

It is looking really interesting. Being a prime, I thought it should be pretty sharp, I guess the comments are confirming it...
