Street is a complex genre - and my favourite.
Unlike many other genres, street relies on capturing a moment that in itself, may not have much meaning, but when frozen in time, tells a story otherwise missed. At least, that's my interpretation :)
With this photo, you were presented with a choice. Very brightly lit white paper, and a dark-skinned person sitting in shadow. What to expose?
I believe you made the wrong choice, if it were a choice.
The papers tell no story I can decipher. Yet the person begging, along with the cane/person walking by, does tell a story. I would have preferred to expose a few stops brighter, and blow out the papers/background.
May I ask - what control mode was your camera in, and how did you meter?

I was metering with Evaluative and shooting in Av. I totally agree with your interpretation of street photography and you're right I should of been shooting in manual and exposing for the subject (the man).
