View Full Version : browsing Raw files

Back in my D60 days, the camera produced a Raw file with the extension .CRW and I found a (.DLL) utility called CRW Thumbnailer that would allow XP Windows Explorer to display thumbnails of those .CRW files in a directory list.
Now I'm into a 20D, and the Raw file format is now .CR2, and that is Raw only, no JPEG.
Is anybody aware of a utility that will allow thumbnail display of .CR2 files in Windows Explorer? It's not absolutely necessary, but it would be handy.

That seems to apply to a 10D, and RAW files of the .CRW type.
I'm after 20D, RAW files of .CR2 type.

The free and very popular image viewer called IrfanView will open raw files from my Drebel as if it is a regular jpg. Try it and see if it'll do the same for your 20D files. You can find it at www.download.com

Does the 20d RAW file have an embedded jpeg? I'm pretty sure the work around for the CRW files just read the embedded jpeg. Doubt if it is possible without one...

Does the 20d RAW file have an embedded jpeg?
I'm fairly certain it does ... and by embedded we're not talking about the RAW + jpeg ... even with just RAW alone there is an embedded jpeg that the camera's LCD uses.
I don't know if that helps Bob - because I have no idea if XP can see that embedded image (since he asks, I'm inclined to think not).

Bob,
You want dpMagic - community version (free). See this post by RFMSports:

As I stated, my Raw files are Raw only, no JPEG. So, XP really can't find anything to make a thumbnail view out of. The 20D can save other types of Raw files, but that is not the discussion.

Yes, that dpMagic utility seems to do the trick. Thanks.
Damn, I didn't even have to restart the computer for it to work.

Actually, the CR2 RAW format has an embedded JPEG (1536x1024 pixels) which can be extracted by Breezebrowser and other image viewing/editing applications for previews or editing. This JPEG is embedded even if you don't choose the option to save a RAW + JPEG. This JPEG is also the image you see in your camera LCD monitor when reviewing shots.
The dpMagic utility presumably works with this embedded JPEG to generate thumbnail views.

Yeah, I thought I saw a post from Bob saying he saved his files as 16 bit jpegs once. Somehow the post had disappeared when I tried to find it again. ;) Had to have been my imagination...

Whaddya mean ... Bob just bought his 20D a few days ago after a dramatic confrontation with a snake that also was not impressed by his 5000+ post count. Until proven otherwise, Bob is a newbie once again. :D

Bob walks on water
Don't I wish.
I was in Death Valley on March 11, and I headed out to shoot something at a pond while carrying my camera and tripod high in one hand. I stepped onto what I thought was a hill of grass, and I went right into the salt swamp water up to my shins. Mucky stuff, too.
I need to get to B&H and order some of those Acme Walk-On-Water Sandals.

It was not a dramatic confrontation with a snake. It was more of a sudden misunderstanding about whose turf I was on.
The Hell of it was that I did not get the shot!
