My eldest daughter is liking the Guitar Hero video game, so I though it would be fun to take a couple shots of her with her favorite game. She had some fun shooting these.

is the shadow purposely done? or mistake?

Purpose, that's why this shot is cropped like it is with her off to the left so far.

I put a bare flash off to the left to deliberately create the hard shadow on the wall. I was trying to create some kind of sense of, oh, I dunno....like a rock legend or something. It's hard to make a nine year old look particularly heroic.;)

I thought maybe the shadow would look like an echo, like a real rock star behind the nine year old parody of a rock star. Maybe this concept needs more work.

I like the concept a lot. Once you said that the shadow was supposed to make her look like a rockstar I started to see what you were doing. To make it executed a little better, I would have her stand farther away from the shadow so they are separated a little better. This should also make the shadow bigger to give that more rockstar-ish effect. Maybe take out the pigtails so that the rockstar shadow doesn't have them ;)

I like it, the shadow reminds me of 'rock band' or 'guitar hero' isn't there a shadow on the box or something like that?

My idea for this kind of came from an accident. I shot some portraits of my sister's kids in my basement with my lights. Then the kids all wanted to take some 'jumping' shots. I was shooting some goofing off shots like the first one below.

Then my nephew jumped too far back as seen in the second shot. The background flash hit him and blew out his arm, but it also made a neat shadow. That got me thinking and was why I tried the shots above. I think I'll put some more thought into this. I need to work on the pose and light angle to get it just right I think.

I like your use of shadow. I generally like the non traditional lighting for portraits.
