The Canon Software disc is available directly from any Canon Service Centre for a reasonable fee. It will be needed if you want to access any Personal Functions.

you don't really need the software. The only thing I can think of is EOS Viewer, since it allows you to add your name to your camera....but everything else you can do third party or download the ddrivers from Canon's website

Obviously you haven't tried changing your personal functions of your 1D because the only way to do that is with EVU or DPP as mentioned by IanD.

About a year ago I was able to download all the neccesary files, programs and drivers required for a 1D from Canon's own website. (I too had a used 1D)

This still may be true ?

Yes, you can download the updates but you will still need a version that came from one of the CDs, otherwise the upddates won't run. As long as you have one of the CDs from any Canon camera, the updates will run fine.

Err no, I have. But when I said, "changing your name", I also meant all the personal settings. They are all in the same windows just different tabs

OK, it looks like I'll need the Canon Software disc from Canon Service. Any suggestions on how to go about this? Everytime I'v called Irvine (well twice) I get patched to NJ, and get lost in a voicemail option maze.

Actually,. with the WIA driver installed in WinXP,. you can change personal functions and stuff just by right clicking on the camera in explorer,..

In fact with the original 1D "classic" I was never able to change the PFs using the software,. but had to do it in Explorer.

The MkII is the exact opposite. It would only let me change PF using the software.
I can't guarantee it will be the same for others.. but thats how it worked for me.

And if you have Zoombrowser from a 10D, Drebel etc.. then all you need is these drivers.
