OK, so he's not THAT vicious after all. It's our little K9, Scrappy -- AKA The Scrapster.
I'm wondering why the DOF appears so shallow despite stopping down from f/1.4 (wide open) to f/4.5?

That's a very nice shot. The mixture of shadows really works for me on this one.

It's a nice shot. To get enough DOF for the entire dog to be sharp, you probably needed f 11 or more. However, that would likely leave the background more in focus than you wanted. Actually, I think the important parts of the shot are sharp.

Hi Stan ..
I'm beginning to learn more as I go along. I always thought a lower (smaller f/stop) meant narrower DOF (and it does). A Higher number means greater DOF (and it does).
What I didn't know is distance from the subject ALSO plays a role. I just knew there had to be a by-the-way in there somewhere. ;)
Thanks for the tip and for having a look.

Dave

looks like a chihuahua or a chihuahua-mix to me!
Nice shot! He looks like a patient boy.

Great picture! Though he doesn't look quite ready to tear my leg off. ;)
I think the DOF on the picture is fine..it really accentuates his face.

\JulieHi Julie,
You're 100% correct -- he's a chihuahua-mix. By that I mean, he's a chihuahua, who's always ready to "mix" things up.
Just kidding, he's a great little dog. However, I find it amazing how an animal who's soooooo small, can be so brave. ;)

-- John He sure acts like he can tear someone's leg off, and we find that quite funny.
Thanks for the kind words about the DOF -- it's an area I clearly need to do some more reading-up on.
The following link was recommended, and I find it quite useful: http://dfleming.ameranet.com/articles.html
