Hi All,

Let me start by saying this is NOT an advert for DVD2!!!

We are in the planning stages for DVD2, and I wanted to know what you would like to see in DVD2, the ETA for the DVD isn't until around xmas time this year at the earliest. When we get closer to a shippable product we will let you know individually by email. This is the one and only post and its a request for information.

By all reports DVD1 was a big hit, so what would you like to see in DVD2? please be specific, anything from critiquing DVD1, to things that were not explained enough to anything new you would like ot see. So far this is the list:

The Passion of the Art – Shooting Glamour Volume 2 – Mastering light.
Chapters:
INTRODUCTION: Jason Cole
Shoots:
Shoot #1: Hydro Majestic – Blue Mountains. Stacey-Lee
Shoot#2: Outdoor pool. Woonona. Lauryn Eagle
Shoot#3: Theme shoot. Farm (Albion Park) – Two Models.
Emma Spiteri & other model (TBA). (maybe Kaesha).
Extras:
- Post Processing using Lightroom (screenshots and tutorials)
- Kai’s colour effects – sponsored
- Broncolour – sponsored
- Hoodman - sponsored
Explained during shoot process:
- Equipment section (explained – all new gear)
- Setting up the lights – why I put them where I do.
- Metering, how the light meter works (in more detail), show how each light is metered and why.
- Using the colour card (the MacBeth)
- Coloured gels – advanced uses. Barn doors to control colour spill.
- Different types of light modifiers
- Directing a new model (from scratch)
- Styling. Where to get clothes.

Other Considerations:
- All Staff must have logo shirts at all times and look professional.
- New DVD layout but same logo.
- New logo on all brands (Cole studios)

I've done a few location shoots lately and find that I need two or more assistants outdoors, particularly when it is a bit windy and softboxes/reflectors require dedicated attention. Some overall guidelines for assistants would be helpful for me. Also, getting lights into difficult places ... my most successful images from one shoot were of the model laying on a branch in a tree about eight feet up from where I was shooting ... my assistant held a 580EX II with umbrella by the end of the folded stand but it was hardly easy. So, I guess the overall category would be using assistants for difficult lighting challenges.

I have not had the opertunity to see #1 YET. But do plan on getting it as soon as I can. But one thing I love to hear is why you chose the light modifiers you are useing on the shot. Most tuts I see are just..." well, today we are going to use a beauty dish, Its one of my favorite modifiers....." Then go off on another topic. Tell us why you want it for this shot over a soft box, or direct light..etc..etc. I know this could be a whole DVD on its own. But I think 3 sentences about your thoughts would help more than you think they would.

I seriously just ordered DVD 1 yesterday, so input for the next will be difficult yet. BUT, from what I've read and heard, I'm waiting patiently to receive and and really looking forward to watching it. If there isn't anything on #1 about working with a rookie/new model then that would be a most helpful suggestion for me.

I already mentioned this to you Jason, but how about some more on model direction? Especially if you are using a never-been-in-front-a-camera type.
Most of your models are all professionals and respond well to direction, but for us small timers, that usually isn't the case.
It might be a bit of a challenge since you want to present a professional product, but if you really want to know what I as a customer want to see, then I want to see how a pro handles a new model who wants to shoot glamour.

I'd like to see why you do things. Don't just tell us that the barn doors prevent spill, take them off and show us how the spill effects the photo. I like to see the results of a bad shot and why its bad then the corrected version as well. I know this is more a remedial request, but i think it sheds light (pun not intended) to all levels of photographers as to why people setup and shoot the way they do.

It's been a while since I watched the first DVD so I'll have to watch it again before I can really give you some opinions or suggestions. But, if there's extra room how about something along the lines of your business model? I know it would be from down under but why not right? The actual business of photography is not as easy as people think so some good info from an established pro would be priceless.

Jon.

one of the main reasons I brought the first dvd was to be shown where the sun was in relation to the angle you were shooting & what time of day it was, and why. it wasn't in there so i was a little dissappointed in that...... but i gained so much more :-)

Hmmm are you sure you have watched the whole lot as i talked several times about the sun in relation to the model, i.e. the sun behind the mode is the rim light etc....

Hey Jason, just an idea that might be worth a thought or two for DVD2 would be to do a 'bridal' glam portrait - something every bride would envy.

Imagine a beautiful model like Stacey in a beautiful wedding dress, sensational soft lighting, - maybe stained glass in the background...(something like Scott Kelby did for his "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom book for digital photogs", bridal portrait)

Maybe you could shoot "tethered" to a lappy for this one? - just to show how its done?

I find that with the weddings I do that brides want to get away from the 'traditional' type portrait, and go for something really glamorous.

This sort of inclusion for the DVD may get wedding photogs interested (and give a plausible excuse for their own wives/gf's as to why they want to buy your DVD? lol)

Exclusive "Bridal Glamour" shoot by JC, - might help to expand your potential customer base?

(what bridal hire, florist etc wouldn't want to help you for this shoot?)

Cheers mate, Mark Hamilton

yeah i thought about doing a wedding DVD, but i think that is just too close ot home, and the last thing i want to be doing is training all my local competitors in my techniques!

Jason,
I'd like to see a shoot in a much smaller location. Most of us don't have the luxury of shooting in a large studio or large location. Many of us are really just shooting in our garage or living rooms. I'd like to see how you would seperate the model from the background in a nice glamorous setting (not just a portrait) with not much distance between the camera and the model . . . and the model from the background. . . Also, in all of the shoots, I'd like to hear the measurments of your locations and the distance between model and background, lights, and your camera. . . I can't wait for dvd2. Keep up the great work.

Thankyou :-)

One of the scenes on the new DVD will be a garage setup, small area, very real for what a lot of people would have available to them. thanks for your feedback.

I didn't know I lived in a world run by women. But this seems to be a common theme in these forums.

i thought about a bridal DVD BUT my competitors are finally starting to catch on (just a couple of them) and i don't really want to give away those secrets to them.. it takes years to get really good at shooting outdoor studio under pressure (at a wedding).

Hi Jason,

I was just about to buy your 1st DVD, but then noticed you have a second one coming up? I'm guessing it's worthwhile to purchase both?

Any idea when the second DVD is coming out? It's been almost six months since you announced it! Judging from your first post its a must-have addition to my DVD collection!!!

And offtopic, do you do discounts for shipping to Australia, as it appears the 15 dollars or so covers international shipping? (from your website)
