Below is an e-mail from me with a reply from Tex Felix (thanks, Ted!) Can Pro90 owners offer further input?

Sounds right to me. I've never actually touched the 550ex, so your
guess is as good as mine.

Don't forget that there is a shutter timing problem that might render
your non-Canon flash useless. I've only heard G1 users complain of
this, so it might not affect the Pro 90. Won't know until someone
tries. So be sure to test your camera with the flash immediately after
buying so you can return it.

As for missing awesome shots, the chances are good that as long as you
are at reasonable distances and zoom settings, and the aperture is set
up properly based on your experience with the flash, you won't miss any
shots at all. It's really nowhere near as bad as it may seem. I
usually pop the flash on my G1, set the camera to "m" mode, 1/60 and
f/2.5, and shoot away. Perfect almost every time. If the camera was
already on those settings, then it's an even quicker arrangement. But
honestly, you won't know how it affects your shooting until you try it.

I have a D30 so I am not sure what system the Pro90 takes. From your post, it seems it takes the same EX system as my D30.

The price of the 550EX is rather high. Sigma has a clone, identical to the 550EX including the wireless flash stuff and all the ETTL stuff. The differences are the build quality; it is more like all the other flash units like Sunpak, Vivitar ect, not tank-like which is the way the 550EX feels. The Sigma has a Guide number of 50, the 550 EX is 55. The Sigma is $180 (B&H and also try Canogacameras.com) the 500EX is $350.

I bought the Sigma and it is great especially with the cost savings. It is called the Sigma 500 Super (not the 500 ST).

Metz is also coming out with a clone to the 550EX. I do not remember the model number, it is on their web site. If the price isn't the same as the Sigma - i will not be interested.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me more about the Metz 550ex clone? I looked around their site and couldn't find it.
