First shot is amazing. Looks like he is going pretty fast!

Thanks Michael, that was actually a lucky accident, it was on 1/125 by mistake, and I panned with the horse to get the background effect. It's actually what I wanted to do, it's just that for the rest of the shots I forgot and set the camera to about 1/1000th, doh! The horse was going pretty quickly.
I've found taking pictures while drunk doesn't work all that well, and taking photos hung over isn't much better. Today I think I was both drunk and hung over at the same time ;)

Hi I am new. I also photograph horses. Mainly Dressage shows and portraits. Great shots. They are hard to capture. I also shoot with a 20D.

Welcome Callady, and thanks :) They are a bit tricky, especially when they're going at full speed along the track, they're huge impressive animals. I took 75 shots and only got a dozen or so I really liked. Of course I always take way more than I need to with digital, because it doesn't matter.

LOVE THE PICS!
The last one reminds me of the typical thoroughbred 'stupidity' traits. BEAUTIFUL SHOTS!

Great shots. Do horses run counter-clockwise in New Zealand?

I believe it depends on the track. Yesterday they were running counter clockwise, this was the jockey bringing the horse back clockwise after the race.

Those are really neat photos. Stopping the action like that in #1 and #3 is a feat in itself!

Cheers. #1 was at 1/125 of a second, #2 was 1/500th. I panned with the horse for each of them, which seemed to work out ok :)
