hopefully this isn't a topic that has been discussed over and over. i looked but couldn't really find anything close to this.

i want to scan some photos (and negatives) with my canoscan9950f and i'm not sure about the color settings. i have a choice between no color setting or i could select Canon colorgear, with the source (scanner) and target (adobe rgb, srgb, etc)
the epson scanner has similar settings a setting for color control with an option box for continuous auto exposure, and display gamma of 1.8 or 2.2.
another box is for ICM with the various source (scanner) and target options, and then there is the box to select for no color settings whatsoever.
if i'm planning to do photoshop adjustments, would setting for NO color settings be better than say scanner source and adobe rgb, or more the auto mode.?
sorry if i'm confusing on this, can't figure out how to do the screen grabs and show the display box. thanks for the info.

Don't know scanner or software.
So a bit of a guess from my side, based on the software I use (Vuescan)
You could set source (scanner) and target (your preferred working space*) in the scanning software.
You could use "no color settings" and *assign* the scanner profile in PS. Then convert to working space. Results should be the same.

For working space: The smalles that will hold all colors available in the photo/ negative/ slide would be best. Some discussions on that here (http://www.hutchcolor.com/profiles.html).
