I have no idea if its good or not. I don't find it easy to critique pictures of myself. I do know that it has captured my mood, which was what I set out to do.

You look sad and thinking. The background works very nicely.

Good shot.

Thanks Doc... sounds like you have ESP :). If I had to explain, I would have said... a bit down and contemplating the road ahead.

Its all good!!! :D:D:D

Just sometimes you contemplate life... and you get a bit serious :p

Well today was just one of those days.

Here is a shot of what I used to take the photo... Two bedroom lamps. One high behind me and to the right. One directly infront of me on the floor with the opaque breadboard taped to the front of the light to difuse it :)

And... lastly but not leastly... a red saturn sheet pegged up to the curtains.

As for the rest of it... it was all a combination of desaturation, adjusting levels, and using the render > lighting effect options. The hardest part, was getting me in focus... that took forever. Lucky its digital. Cheap retakes :)

Great shot, I really like it!

And its nice to get such a good picture with using only household lamps etc. Makes me want to try something like this myself!

Well done!

I like it ... well done. Makes for an excellent avatar, too.

Thanks Wavy & Jay....

Wavy, the thing that I had to find was something to diffuse the lamp. The only two things that I could find around the house that worked was a see through VHS video case, and a plastic breadboard. All the shots that I tried with the lamps shining directly on my face were all no good. Good luck... make sure you post it when your done :)

Good shot,

... but I liked your old avatar better

Seriously, it does not 'work' as good in the small avatar.

Best regards,
Andy

When I first saw your photo, I thought it was a picture of you watching TV. Self portraits are extremely difficult. It's like taking a photo with your eyes closed. The lighting is very well done. Nicely done.

cool. I prefer a little more contrast on b/w but this looks good. Great work with the improv. lighting

Thanks guys. I tried more contrast, but it adversly affected the way the skin looked. I think it had something to do with the lighting not being soft enough.

I took some of the advice... and upped the contrast, made it a bit brighter. Is it any better?

Much better, gives it more depth. The black looks deeper and the lighter face stands out more. Also the shadows on the face are a little more severe, this adds a little menace. Better I think.
