Flash issue

Has anyone had an issue with the built in flash on the 40D? I very seldom used the flash as most of my photo's are bird photo's during the day but tonight the wife asked me to take a photo of a little girl we were sitting and I couldn't get the flash to deploy. It would give me an error 5 flash is obstructed, turn camera off/on and try again. Did not work. Tried several different settings such as auto.AV, etc still no joy. Does this sound like a trip to the repair facility? Appreciate any guidance anyone can share.

I assume you pushed the button to release the flash.

There should be a spring plate on one side of the hot shoe with a pin under it (it's on the left on my 20D). The pin sometimes sticks down and prevents the flash from popping up. Especially if you have been using a hot shoe flash predominately..

Checked the hot shoe and used a little can air, it now works. Thanks for the information.
