The s230 is part of the Elph line, so it is smaller and more compact than the s30. Its about the size of a cigarette pack, just heavier and stainless steel. The zoom is better on the s30 and it can go a combined 10x digital/optical while the s230 can go 6.4 combined. Image quality is basically the same on both with the same features like being able to save in about 13 different file sizes, video on both, lcd screen, sound quality, etc. The s230 is cooler with its small size and look, but the s30 is a better overall camera.

I think both the S230 and the s30 are good cameras. However, the s30 has more features that you can grow into. For this reason, I would recommend it over the other camera.

Gadgetgeek brought up a good point; the S30 does have more features.
I had the G2 and it was honestly to much for me, I didn't need all the "features" that came with the G2 so I sold it and picked up a S230, couldn't be happier.
I did look at the S30 but I wanted a smaller digital, a point and shoot and not all the "bells and whistles."
I do a lot of photo work with 35mm SLR's so I wanted a good point and shoot digital. It has all the features I need to produce crisp, clean photo's. :) Plus it's compact size makes it easy to carry around.
Hope this helped.
