i got the 50mm 1.8 lens. but everyone mentions having a 50mm prime lens. do they really mean a 31mm prime lens? (because of the 1.6x crop factor)?
or do they mean 50mm, which is really 80mm on a DSLR.
i'm confused and new to SLRs.

They mean the EF 50 F/1.8 lens. On a DSLR it's similar to a 80 mm on an anolog camera.

---or 65mm on a 1D (1.3X), and 50mm on a 1Ds (X).

I use a Canon EF 50mm, f1.4. I realize that on my 20D it is equivalent to a 80 mm lens. However, I am very happy with this lens due to is wide open aperature. It just means I need to move back a bit if I want the 50 mm view (in terms of old 35mm SLR talk). It would be nice to have a 30-50mm Zoom at f1.4, but I think that product does not exist.

Larry,
You are absolutely right. A 30-50mm short barrel lens even at 1.8 would be in my bag right now if Canon sold one.

I think Sigma now makes an EX pro type 30mm prime just for the 1.6x crop factor DSLR market. It may be worth a look.

Canon sells the EF 28mm f1.8, which is about as close as it gets to a normal lens for a 1.6 camera. Works quite nicely, too.

I would prefer the 35 1.4L for a normal lens. It is said to be one of the Canon's finest lenses and I'll purchase it soon...

I use a 35/2 for most of the 50mm stuff. Works well coming from a film cam.

I'm going to purchase it soon, too. If it ever hits the shelves. There's a waiting line on that lens.
